My bourbon reds are still laying. ANd the sweetgrass though a Narrigansett tom has had his genetic effects on one hen.I am thinking of hatching out some Poults when I get back from Florida. Is it too late? Will my styrafoam incubator be ok for this? Which Turkey should I start out with? How many eggs should I start out with. OH SO MANY QUESTIONS!!!I want to hatch something out and have been dying for some turkey I am just so nervous. Should I get shipped eggs or buy local? Is there a difference in fertility?![]()

Thanks a ton! I was thinking of 6-10 eggs. I am new at incubating...in fact i have not even had anything hatch in the bator. I had 18 guinea eggs but they were three weeks old when I got them and stored in a hot house so none even formed. My bourbon reds are still laying. I bought 20 poults from Porters that arrived at the end of AUgust 2012 and they grew very well and were outside all winter.
My suggestion is buy a number of eggs, to improve the possibity of more hatching, so there is a playmate of the same type. Many people buy only 4 eggs, chances are better with 8 or 10. Set the turkey eggs and have a few chicks about the same age, to show them the ropes. ANd that way you have a friend if only 1 poult hatches.
Buy local if you can-- avoids the handling issues of the USPS.

Yesssss it was dirt preciousssssssMy bourbon reds are still laying and in fact one went broody last night UNDER the coop, I had to get her out with a 2x4 basically pushed right up her butt. She was not happy, and I was covered in dirt (and some things that was most likely not dirt, but we'll just say dirt).
