The Old Folks Home

Remember Wisher, it is quite possible to have an EE lay a brown egg if she didn't pick up the blue egg gene from her mother. An EE will only carry one blue egg gene and one brown egg gene and that is why they lay green eggs and not blue (from my little bit of egg genetics knowledge). So if daddy is a pure BCM (only brown egg genes) and mom is an EE, it is possible that mom only "threw" her brown egg gene and not the blue gene, hence the brown eggs. Make sense?
BTW, SCG that is a gorgeous egg. If she keeps laying eggs like that, I think you should blow them for your Christmas ornament projects. I really hope Caramel gets better quick.

I had one..from Arielle! The prettiest blue girl. Just a watin for that blue or blue/green egg. Then it came. The prettiest brown egg. She layed those nice smooth eggs too, no speckles, spots, roughness, just a nice smooth, and, very large egg.

I may have this wrong, but it was my impression that brown and blue are found in two entirely different locations within the chicken's genetic make-up. You have a choice of 'blue' or 'not blue' at one locus, and 'brown' or 'not brown' somewhere else. You could have a chicken with two blue alleles and two brown alleles; the offspring of such chickens would always lay green eggs (blue and brown are both dominant traits, right?) If you are working with a first generation EE, and know that the "other" parent was a non-blue egg layer, you could be sure that the bird only has one blue egg allele. Otherwise, you couldn't be sure whether they had one blue egg allele or two - unless you had EE's like I had one time.
This could be the case. One "not blue" at the first allele and one "BROWN" at the other would/could give that nice dark egg with the speckles.

Today, I had an opportunity to spend some time with my DS#3. We were talking about lots of things and at one point we were talking about a new logo for my poultry endeavors. I said I would like to get t-shirts with the logo printed big on the back and maybe golf shirts with the logo small on the pocket area for shows. He suggested we could sell some of our shirts if people wanted them. I said 'sure' since I like to encourage entrapenureism in my children. He liked my idea, but had an idea of his own. He suggested that we make t-shirts with ... "Chicken Dynasty - Our hens are Happy, Happy, Happy!" The pic would be our chickens with beards. I thought it was funny. Can you guess his favorite show?

I "dragged" HHandbasket and her step-daughter to the property this morning for a walk-around before it got too hot. I knew HH would feel the mojo in the granite out-croppings (as do I), but it was gratifying the 17 year old was just as thrilled with the natural surroundings. They were delighted with the little one-room cabin, too.

HH is REALLY into gardening. I mean, she grows tomatillos and quinoa, fer goddess' sake! (That's not all, by any means, but she's the first person I have ever known who grows stuff like that in a garden.) She envisioned forage crops for my flock as well as other plantings she would be tending as a combined source of healthy foods for us.

Another vote for a "real" dog to protect the flock when I am not present.

I have been eyeing my flock members to consider who goes to live at the new property and who stays here.

It's so hard not to plan, even though it's not yet a sure thing.

Linda, while in planning mode, start looking at the guard dogs. Most have heavy coats as they are from mountain regions. Maremmas are smaller version of the Great Pyrennese. THey do need to be trained to help bring out the best in them.

Glad to see everyone is doing great. Linda: sounds like you have your hands full with the property. I hope all goes well.

I can not wait for my EE to lay. I want to see some eggs. Really any eggs at this point. None of my chickens are laying yet and I bought them in March. I dont know what I am doing wrong lol.

tomorrow starts my LPN schooling. Pray for me, or think about me SCG, tonight. I know I will do great but it is still nerve racking. Being a Mom, Wife, house keeper, and full time student is going to be difficult.

Mom is doing good lately, the visit really brought her spirits up, as soon as I get a new mouse for my computer I will be sharing many many pictures.

Now I must go feed the baby mocking bird that my son decided to save on the way home.
