The Old Folks Home

Thanks for the pic's, Nice to see so many people having fun! Are any of your younguns in the family pic?

Scott
Yes all three of them and my husband are in the picture, There is my little girl sitting in the chair, my husband has my middle son on his shoulder and my oldest son is hidden some where in there LOL
I need some help PLEASE!!! One of my one month old poults got out and my dog got him before I found him. It has a tooth puncture under it's left wing near it's vent. It is a good size hole compared to the size of the baby. I am wondering if it is going to die or can I help it?
Here is a pic of the wound
Aww poor thing, Luckily I have found that chickens heal good.
I know hind sight is 20/20-- so I don't mean this as a critism. All my dogs were trained to obey commands-- a lot of work on my part. I could call off a dog IF I was there to do so. THe next level fr training is harder: to leave it even if I am not there. In the house my dogs NEVER touched a chick or cat. NEVER. Of course cats NEVER killed a mouse in the house either. Guess it was neutral ground. But outside the cats caught mice but never touch a chicken; outside the dogs also never touch a bird. BUT In their pen-- whole 'nother ball game!! Had to go out a window once to save some turkey poults-- didn't think I could trust the dogs to hold the "wait" command until I raced thru the house, out the door and around the house. As I'm climbingout he window and almost falling on my face, lol, they sure thought I was going to release them from that command and have at those turkeys. They couldn't stand still, feet up/ down, moving side to side, BUT never forward.

A trained dog is worth his weight in gold, and peace of mind. Love the ROtties.
We have my WGSD who is not so trained but old enough to not care about birds! Three nights ago we found a Blue Heeler chasing off a skunk from the chicken pen, Luckily I have dog training ability and he is learning quick, He does not bother the chickens and is very calm around the kids. Definitely worth having. We have done away with dogs and cats for killing or hurting our chickens. I am also a HUGE Rottie fan!!!

I like the message, but it is so poorly written that it is painful to read. It is a translation from a foreign language? It is a Blog can't it be fixed?

Off to massage my headache.....
I don't think the blogger speaks English as a first language. Also, I tend to get very suspicious of anything that claims to be "The Truth" about anything; much of the time, it turns out to be a poorly-written collection of factoids intended to support some conspiracy theory to which the author subscribes. Whenever I see such things, I'm just waiting for the pitch - "buy this from me, send me money to get the message out, etc, etc," - but that's just me.

I always trained my dogs too! But when DH and I got married he had two dogs that he had never spent any time with except to pat their head and feed them. They were Never socialized or around other animals or people! When my kids and grandkids came to visit our dog biscuit tried to bite all the kids and ME! None of our kids will come visit because of this dog! He is a pit bull and he is nearly blind as well which makes it even worse! But my DH will not do anything to teach this dog anything. I have tried to teach the dog some commands and try to get him to leave kids alone! But when I yell at the dog DH thinks I am being mean?

DH also said he will never pen or chain a dog again! I did get biscuit to let go of the turkey as soon as I saw what he had. But he had already bit it. I popped his nose and told him he was bad!

Quote: Most dogs don't do well chained IMO. B would bite the rope and run free. Then I tried chain attached to cinder blocks, rotating locations , he just dragged the 2 blocks. Then we fenced the yard w/6 ft picket fence. yeahhh! All the dogs enjoyed the huge

WHen I was training my dogs the instructor helped my get the dogs ready for a new baby in the house. I wrapped up a doll like an infant to walk around the house. My lab went crazy standing on back legs to see. Everyone went a little nuts. Over a doll !! I h ad solid baby gates up everywhere in my house Strong sturdy steel. My kids could not get to the dogs. A dog could always move away from an annoying child and the child could not follow.

During the months of training, I used a quiet firm voice . ANd lots of practiice. Twice a day for about 10 minutes. The rotties are intelligent obedient and like to please. Training them was EASY. My girl could follow 25 commands both verbal and hand signals. SHe was a peach.

Maybe you can train this dog-- get a crate. Have a leash and collar. ANd start in. Make it fun and rewarding. My dogs like my attention and they got food rewards. SMall nuggets I could keep in my pockets and pull out as needed. Perhaps just start with being able to approach the dog to put on a collar and leash and let him run around with it while you talk to him and run with him. WHen you put on the collar give him treats, then when he comes to you, give him more treats. He will look at you for more treats. You want this.

Where is Kim? SHe knows more than I do!! I have only trained 3 rotties. When the delivery man comes, and I call the dogs come in. Except the rope biter!!lol ( So I don't call him in; I don't want to reinforce ignoring commands)

I have rescued, fostered, and trained for many years. I am not doing it now, but have to say..some dogs can be trained to leave it, and some can't. Too stubborn, mean, and as far as I can tell, are not willing to please their people. Yes, taking time with a dog that is willing to please a human is worth the time for sure. But I have run across those could care less about what you want from them. I've had many breeds come into my home with the fostering and rescuing..and it didn't seem to matter what breed, there are some stubborn ones in any breed. I love love the Golden R. I actually had one that wouldn't even pay attention to me. What? A Golden? Very unusual. That one went back to the breeder. he was going to be mine, but now way. Also had a black lab that was determined to be the boss...never had a dog butt me as often as this one would. Full speed ahead, right into my legs if I didn't move. I didn't have many that were hard to work with, but a few.
My Golden now looks at the chickens, but when I say "leave it"! She knows, and turns and comes back to me. Not so sure I would leave her alone as of yet with them..she's still a pup in training. My girl. :) My first girl Golden. I tend to like the male dogs overall.

Written as a second language perhaps?? My head hurt a little too. Take away good though.

We got him a collar and a leash and a crate. He got his collar caught on some barbed wire and ripped a hole in his neck last year. I doctored him up. Any time he gets hurt I doctor him up. And I can get a leash on him. Dh got him in the crate. I can get him to stay on our screened in porch when I have to and tell him to stay. When he has had enough you better hurry or he will go thru the screen! He does listen to some commands. And BB she is brain damaged for real. She does not know which way is up or down. All she does is race semi's all day. I did finally get her to quit barking at every car that went by! Dh thought I was being mean! But she kept me awake all night barking! I told DH either she has to quit barking or I need heavy duty sleep meds! But we manage. I think he is getting the idea of kids, because the last time our son and his family came I told biscuit to go lay down and he actually did!

I think he is trying to do what I want him to do... We will keep at it!

DId a decent job of it.

In college I had a food science prof that didn't beleive the cholesterol nonsense. TUrns out he is right. THere is enough information now to show that it is a high carb diet tha meses with the locaitonof the chol in the body. It is supposed to be stored int he cells not running around the arteries. A normal diet of meats, fish, vegies, and fruits and nuts, much lower in carbs than the government standard will put the balance back into the cholesterol system. Cholesterol is very important and does a hundred different jobs. It is so important that if the diet does not have enough in it, the body will make it.

THe key is to eat a lower carb foods. SOme sources say under 120 grams, depending on exercise level.

I can move my BP based on what I eat. Certainly my wrist hurts much less on LC. ANd I sleep much better. Carbs effect the whole system including the cholesterol. cholesterol in the 180-220 rang is fine; its the LDL and HDL that are really imporant and tell the story if the foods are have the correct effect.

Insulin plays a part in this also. Cut off 2 heads at once by going low carb. Insulin causes the lining of the arteries to roughen up, then the cholesterol collects to fix and patch and have a place to hang out. THen it calcifies and becomes plaques. Much of this is reversable with a change in diet and adding exercise. Many docs are not doing surgery anymore, rather pointing to some simple changes rather than a big sugical bill. Horray.

( I read many different sources; and especially like the research literature to be cited-- usually long and boring techinical details. THis I though would be more interesting for most folks to read.)

There was a news article yesterday about eggs and diabetes. Diabetics that had two eggs a day for breakfast lost more weight than those eating other breakfast foods. A lower insulin spike was thought to be what helped.
