The Old Folks Home

Quote: I don't think so, <BG> I live too far out of town to get Cable and we (DW and me) like NASCAR so I do have Sat. TV (when it's not raining too hard). I got a Track-fone 2 years ago when DW took a road trip, it is a P.I.T.A.!! but I can call for help if needed,or be called, so I guess all is good. Nice to find another (don't need new stuff) person on here!!

My phone is a trackphone too, Very difficult reception here at the house-- very spotty. I prefer the flip phone design. Like you I can make calls, and get calls.

I still have the old record player . . . and the records. No flat screen TV's here. ANd my PC is OLD!! lol BUt it works fine. Soccer coach upgraded the hardware for me. Very kind of him.

SCG-- you asked about the chicken soup. I don't have a set recipe anymore. Start with the basics a turkey , duck, or chicken. Roast the bird, then boil and pick off meat. Add Thyme and/or sage. salt. And extras. Root vegies, onions, carrots, or peas. Onion salt instead of kosher salt. Maybe rice or pasta or canned beans. Never the same way twice.

THe simplest one is just a roasted bird with garlic salt, cover with water and put onto boil. I keep at a simmer for days and take a cup as wanted.

Sounds good. Similar to how I make my stock, but then I strain it and just keep the juice.

I got banished from the bedroom due to coughing around 0500. Around 0530 my phone started going off, letting me know I was starting to get email and messages. I rescued it from the bedroom, but not before it woke BF. He fell back asleep a little bit ago. Now I'm about to go bring roosters into the basement for holding for processing later on today. They'll be crowing down there I'm sure. I'm about to hit 3 strikes... today is not going to be good for relationship harmony.

either you guys are early risers or up all night like me - think I go hit the hay now. I'm the tech dinosaur too. No cell phone, ipad, kindle, or other stuff. Still have a regular old TV that weighs a ton, record player and a few albums left, sold most of them to some guy several years ago when I needed some $$$- isn't that how it always goes?

Quote: I moved out the bedroom long ago. Hated the middle of the night phone calls, and never just one. Ruined my sleep. THe couch is my best bed ever if it means I can sleep. lol

The roosters can't wait until SO is up?? I have a rooster out side my window and he is annoying at 3 am, or 5am, or whenever he feels the neeed to crow. Kills my sleep. HE is my extra, so need him. But every morning, my sleep is disrupted. Need a solution.

I need to off a few birds todaytoo. WInter is coming in fast.

I got my extras done last weekend. I only had three. We got a FoodSaver to seal them up before freezing them. It works really good. Now I am thinking of turkey

I think this crew is the early risers. I'm usually up by 0400, but awake long before that. Dsqard puts me to shame.

Yeah, the on call schedule used to have BF and I with 3-4 nights a week of near constant pages, phone calls and getting out of bed. It was a disaster. We could bill in 15 minute increments only, and at the end we were each billing for between 5.5 and 6.5 hours for an 8 hour shift (which was obviously our nights sleep). Then we'd have to go in and work a regular shift the next day. You just can't do that and function. Call is much improved now, and now he does an entire M-F night call schedule every 3-4 weeks (I'm out of that rotation now, rank has its privileges) and we each do an entire weekend of call every 4-5 weeks. It's enabled us to stay in bed together, although there's still some nights that can get a few phone calls. I'm still "on call" all the time if the operator can't reach someone, or the alarms go off... but thankfully that's been reduced recently, too.
The roosters are happily crowing in the basement right now; BF is most definitely up. The roosters were in the regular coop - which has a run that's about a quarter acre. Once I let the beasts out I will never catch them, so I have to take them off the roost in the morning and then into the basement holding tank (also known as the brooder). I hate keeping them down there in the dark any longer than I have to, so I'll be getting my stuff together soon and heading out. I figure this will be the last nice weekend for a long time.

I may attempt to do the turkeys today (just two) if BF ends up staying home - they won't fit in the brooder so they're out in the run. I'd need help capturing them (they're at least slower than the Cornish game birds which I will never be able to catch), and also help holding them on the block. They're way too big for me to handle on my own. I can't wait to see how much they weigh and what they look like dressed.
I am going to try and sign up for a hunter safety course soon; this year with the crazy turkey population the DNR is allowing every hunter to get two wild turkeys instead of one - I'm hoping BF gets one, too. I'd like to try it. He was supposed to go out deer hunting this morning but he's still in bed. Maybe I should have brought the roosters in sooner.
