I stayed up until after 10 last night. I felt like such a rebel.
I got all the roosters done, leaving one lone cornish roo to seed next year's chicken crop. I would certainly recommend them for sheer size to anyone who wants meat birds but who doesn't want the meat bird freaks (cornish cross). The only problem with them is they are
wild. They want to roost in trees, they aren't very friendly (they don't attack you, but they don't come running to you with the rest of the flock, they stay back and watch) but the carcasses are fantastic. I'm disappointed that I only had 4 "extra" boys. I've got 4 girls, too, so I have the potential to make some more Cornish next year, but the girls generally don't stay with the flock - they go off in the woods in search of food (see above - wild) so I'm not sure they'd be bred or that I could locate their eggs. I would like to combine the roo with some of my turkens - they make a nice processing bird, too, and easy to kill and clean. Hopefully now that he's alpha he'll stay with the flock and inseminate the girls.
The neighbor came over about an hour ago when I had the last boy on the chopping block and was ready to swing the axe. She brought me some delicious soup, but I'm pretty sure she wasn't expecting to see what she saw. I asked her to help with the turkeys - I'm definitely going to need some help and BF is off looking for bambi. She declined, but only because she couldn't figure out what to do with her kids.
