The Old Folks Home

Woke up to four little fluffers.

Oh so cute---- I envy that you have a mild winter climate and can keep hatching. I'm secretly hoping the eggs DH wants me to set do not develop.

I needed more hens. I have two roosters and five hens and the poor hens are being over loved. I keep them(the babies) in the brooder until they feather out and then they will get moved to the new little coop, which is heated. By the time these new babies are ready for the little coop, Dottie and Cricket should be big enough for the main coop.

All four chicks look like BOs. I can't really tell, but I don't think any have white earlobes from Diego, my WLH, and I'm pretty sure they are not from any of my red sex link girls. That only leaves my two BOs, Boo Boo and Prince Eric.

I love my BO, I keep my old rooster because he is a good boy. And I love the color. A rich gold, very shiny and bordering on hints of red. His large single comb has alread been nipped by frost bite . . so he is pretty winter hardy now.

My BO girl is molting and has been in a bad mood all week. Usually she's, if not friendly, at least tolerent of us...but Prince Eric is a real prince. He follows me around the yard and is always calm and steady. He and Diego have crowing competitions but they've never fought. They just need more girls so my few won't be ridden ragged. I'd love to get some eggs from different breeds to inject fresh blood into the flock. I do have Cricket, who everyone has told me is a rooster. I have no idea what breed he is, but he's totally adorable.

My BO hens from last years hatch are still laying-- 1 day from 2 girls, with no lights. THe roosters are sweet and never a problem.

Spring is coming and lots of eggs willl be available on the sales page!! Great opportunity to add to your flock.

My baby Welsummers are finally big enough to go out with all the 'big' girls without being attacked! And I have finally caught my rooster in the act of being 'naughty' so now I know to expect some fertilized eggs at least from a couple of girls. He has 2 that he really prefers to all the others. I've been totally surprised that even though it has been down in the upper 30's at night here, all my girls are still laying every day with no light or heat in the coop. Hope they will keep that up all winter :)
