The Old Folks Home

gryeyes, Just asking why are you keeping so many roos? Do you run a rooster rescue or just couldn't part with them?? There have been a couple I wish I could have kept around but couldn't. Darn neighbors.
These are my GrandChicks! After having to get rid of so many roosters in the past two years due to  neighbors, I vowed only mean Roos would "go away." Hence my purchase of the property (Thistle Dew Ranch) for most of the flock. (I divested some of an inherited IRA to accomplish this, scaring the heck out of my financial planner.) Plus, if I want to get serious about egg sales, I can't do it at home (the Homestead) the way I want, due to pissy  neighbors. Wait, I didn't answer your question... I guess I run a Rooster Rescue for MY OWN, those I cannot bear to send to Freezer Camp.

I too find the sound pleasant . . .more than I thought I would.  Just not at 3 am thoughor now its 4 am-- when the light goes on for the hen house. THe boys all talk to each other coop to coop. RIght now they are running the roll call . . . .

Mine are far enough away in the backyard that we have to turn every thing off to hear them in the morning. Mine don't start until about 6 AM.

I have a few stories that I haven't shared yet. When the kids were young they asked to go with a neighbor to get some Easter chicks. They came back with a chick and a duckling and the 2 grew up to be best buddies. The chicken began to roost on our window sill when he got old enough to fly up there. We wondered what sex they were until one Sunday morning we woke up to a terrible noise. Betti said what is that noise? I said I believe that is the chicken and it is a rooster and he is trying to crow. Nothing that we could think of would break the rooster from roosting on our window sill. Every evening I would wait until dark and I would catch the rooster and set him on the limb a pine tree in the back of the back yard so he did not awaken us with his crowing in our bedroom window. If the kids went into the back yard and turned the flood lights on the rooster would move back to his perch on our window sill and I had to move him back to the tree.

What happened to the rooster? BF used to live in his uncle's basement and a flock of guinea hens would come by at dawn every morning and peck at their reflections in the basement window. He hated them with a passion. Funny how he still thinks we should get guineas, though. I think guineas are just as dumb as turkeys but a whole lot louder. No, thanks. (Saying that I'll probably get guineas next year).

My first reversible "naughty-nice" apron made it to its recipient yesterday afternoon. It was a big hit. I've got a few more to make in the next few weeks. My quilt blocks are also coming along, I'm about 1/3 of the way through the blocks. Sewed a half a throw pillow with cording in class yesterday, too. Lots to do!

TGIF!

The rooster stayed around for several months. It was funny the rooster and the duck mated like they were the same species. I have often wondered if their genetics were close enough to allow inter breeding. But the rooster was also mean. It would follow any one across the yard and attack when they turned toward him. Finally we found someone who wanted him and we gave him to them with fair warning that he would attack. They thought they could work with him so that was the last we saw of him. We also eventually gave the duck away also.

Guineas are so cute when they hatch though!
