The Old Folks Home

Oooo, nice reds ron. I have gotten the Silver Penciled Rocks from him. He was great to work with when the eggs came smashed and I mean bad. I sent him photos, and he sent me chicks! They are very pretty, but go broody often! A gal bought the rest that I didn't want, and she said they didn't lay great, and they went broody all the time. Yep, mine too. Very pretty though. Bet your reds lay though, that's what they do! And for RIR's being mean> Nah. I love them in my flock, along with the leghorn. Both have been very sweet through the years. A little bossy at times with the other birds, but nothing horrible, They didn't pick feathers at all, just pushed. Will have to look and see if I can find an older photo of my SPR. She wasn't full grown, but getting pretty. Here are the babys he sent.

Don't pay attention to the dates! I didn't have that camera set right. Not a nice camera at all, I have a much better one now. Just a small canon, but I love it. These were sent a few years ago.
Thanks Cynthia I would like some RIR because of their size. I do want some sweet birds but the ones I have are sweet except for one turkey hen that gives me problems now and then.

Sorry ahead of time but I have to say a few things.

Many folks on BYC have well bred chickens from named lines, some have birds from small flock breeders, and lastly other get their birds from large factory style hatcheries.Personally I have some from all these sources. While you can get the same breed from all these sources each line will have different qualities and may end up polar opposites in the end.
If you get a registered lab puppy from a good small breeder it should grow to be a great companion, intelligent, and willing to hunt if trained (all aspect expected of the breed). But get a registered puppy from a puppy mill and its a roll of the dice, unhealthy, no hunting instinct, lack of intelligence and even aggression can be found due to sloppy breeding practices. When a business is worried about quantity quality suffers.
I guess what I'm saying is while we all love our animals, handle them alot and raise them to be friendly each breed differs because of it's source. My Polish are that way, the ones from the hatchery are personality wise not as " good' (flighty and timid) as the small farm ones ( underfoot friendly) though I raised them all the same. I believe it's in the breeding.

OK I'll be good now I just had to voice my opinion on that.

So you used the styrofoam board-like stuff on the verticals? Or the batting? Paper-backed? Sorry, just been going over this in my head repeatedly, and I need to get a plan in place - including another structure to house birds in while we complete this one, ugh ...
2 cents more---Having built our house--- the paper is used on the side of the heated side and as this will change summer to winter, use a batting without paper. My batting hold into my basement ceiling bays without any help. We didn't staple anything when we insulated the house with pink.

Quote: I've tracked weather for years as we depend on good hay crops to feed the farm animals-- this is the craziest weather yet. ANd I thought the last 2-3 years was wacko . . . but THIS is crazy. down , up down up down up.......... NOT typical here.

Supposed to have gorgous Northern lights tonight-- look after sundown. Weatherman says look NE for us in the BOston area.

You caught me!!!

Quote: I agree with Ron, good birds are nice tempered because the breeder selects for it. In the big hatcheries it depens on the management. GOod leghorns are also of good temperament. My RIR from McMurray are my nastiest girls. No one steals their eggs though.

Now, for weird weather. We have fog! I know, you think fog isn't weird. Yes it is, if you live where we live. We are up on the bench, or foot hills of our mountain range. We are no where near a lake, or stream. No water. I can't imagine how it is on the freeway right now. It runs along side the Utah Lake for miles. First time in the 6 and half years we've lived here that we have seen fog..up here.
My kids were intrigued by the unexpexted fog-- more like mist sworling up hill then down. We only get the fog 1-2 times a year when conditions are right. Hope all was well on that highway-- our birdge was low visabilty and I also get scared as it is over that bridge-- long way down--

Thanks everyone for your opinions. I do want large birds and I will raise them by hand and handle them alot so that they will be easy to handle and want to be handled like my other birds and turkey. Mine love attention and come wanting to be petted. I am just excited that my DH is letting me get some more birds!

We handled our RIR all the time, kids lived in the brooder box. Girls still are my most agressive in the nest box. I will not be getting RIR from a hatchery again.

Ok Hagar3, you asked..this isn't even the half of them, but here goes a picture overload! You can tell the difference..lol... I know the names too!

OMG!!! You have a lovely family Cynthia!!!! Not sure which I loved more the GC wearing the chicken or the two sitting on the fence!!!

CHickadoodles -- I am investing $200 on 25 chicks from a breeder that has a very good rep; and when you look at buying a trio from a good breeder you are getting the best of the best, and the $ for a trio varies.

I'm sure you will find what you are looking for----

I had figured it will cost me quite a bit for the birds I want. I will not be able to get them all at once. I was showing my DH the breeds I want last night. So we are still looking. He also wants to get some larger turkey this year. I am getting some Bourbon Reds and some Standard Bronze I guess 10 of each and see how that goes. As for the chickens I am still waiting on some info and looking at other sources.

Arielle, I was thinking I might spend 4-5 hundred on all the different breeds I want. I just don't want to spend it all on one breed....
