The Old Folks Home

We have talked about putting up a hive or two for a couple of years now, our concern is that there may not be adequate food here. We live on a prairie, there are a couple of cacti that bloom briefly regardless of the rainfall although more brings more blooms, and we have some native blue flax and a couple of other small plants that bloom, but we have been experiencing drought conditions the last few years so not as many blooms the last few years, both volunteers and planted. Last year we planted more catmint and a few other flowering plants bees are said to appreciate, but how would we determine whether there was enough here or near to keep them well fed?

Bees are not interested in anything other than nectar/sugar. Wasps and hornets like protein and are carnivores. I'd assume that's what you have, honestly. I have a hive of bees and can lift the lid to it without a bee suit on and not have them sting me. They are very gentle. The above is italian honeybees. They are more brownish and very fuzzy. Most people should start with a langstroth hive as someone already mentioned. I ended up going with all mediums for the boxes that way everything is interchangeable. Some people go with "deeps" and "shallows" but then all the frames or wax foundation isn't interchangeable and you end up buying more stuff to fit them. Around here you can get a hive for about 150$ with everything that you need to get started, and a package of bees will set you back about 100$. You should probably also have at minimum a bee veil and gloves, although I went with the full blown suit because I was terrified of them. It gives me a bit more comfort when playing around with the hive, but as my first season drew to a close I used it less and less. We used the book "beekeeping for dummies" in my class. I would highly recommend finding a local bee club and taking their beginner class. It's all well and good to read the book but seeing and touching things in action is better. I had to drive two counties over for my class (my county doesn't have a club) but it was worth it for 6 weeks.
I haven't had a hive for several years. I moved and never got more hives. If I did get stung I could scrape the stinger out with a hive tool and the sting never hurt like a wasp. For those not familiar with honey bees. If you get stung and it didn't leave the stinger and venom sac behind it wasn' t a bee. If yuo see the stinger and the venom sac it was. People seldom get stung by honey bees.

We have had 6 pip zip and hatch while everyone was working on the roof we lost to winds yesterday.

2 Australorps 2 Cuckoo Marans 2 Red Sex Links pullets. All the same SoCal supplier. More Cuckoo Marans, the last SL and some shipped buff orps have pipped.

I have fingers crossed for the 2 other Australorps and I have some pullets amongst them!!

yes Ron

As you are aware, its been a total struggle for a whole year to get Australorps on CocoBeach

All I really wanted when I started this was Barred Rocks, RIR, Australorps, Jersey Giants, Buff Orps and some sort of Laced Wyandotte.

With this hatch, I will have completed my original goals

Provided of course that I end up with atleast 1 male and 1 female 'Lorp
