I had kind of the same problem this past fall, the chickens loved eating the fallen apples, until they were taken over by what I think are yellow jackets.

I agree with Hagar. Those look just like the wasps in my area. We have a couple kinds of bees around here but the carpenters are almost black with thin yellow/white bands and very fat looking.
