The Old Folks Home

Hi! I am new, and this is the first post I have done....I have 6 ladies and two roosters(one is a yard pet). We are about to order up to 50 meat(I have ALMOST decided on the Freedom Ranger), to see how we like growing out birds. We have always had chickens of some sort, but I am wanting to get serious about it. As a mom of 7, yes, the chickens have taken time and resources my kids would have loved to use but isn't that the point? I involve them heavily, they all don't really like chickens, some more than others. But they all help out because they all eat eggs :) If they have qualms I make cookies, using eggs.....
And yes, I am getting old. My oldest daughter is pregnant with my second grandchild, and my littlest is 3 :)
Oh yes! I think I will also add ducks and guineas this year.....

Ducks and Guineas are great! Do you have experience processing? I cooked a Basque Hen Cockerel last night for dinner. It was a recipe called Chicken Jambalaya where the chicken is baked in a dutch oven withe the rice, tomatoes and spices. It was very tasty!

lol!! Nope. We have ordered from Murray McMurray a few times, and have gotten chicks locally from a small operation. I really like the Freedom Ranger farm, but in the long run I would like to cross my own? If you can't tell we are in this for the eggs/meat/pest control. Plus they are really pretty when I let them roam the yard :)
We are converting our huge shed/barn into a divided chicken house, hopefully soon. If anyone knows where I could get a few lavender orpingtons to add to our layers that would be wonderful!

Tell us where you're located and someone may be able to help with local birds.
