Oz between you and SCG I have been inspired to check on how my health is. Got my full physical (well still have to schedule the mammogram) the other day. Got the blood drawn this morning for the labs. I am curious where my cholesterol level is. BP is still real good.

We just harvested the bok choy. The Okra are being picked as they are ready. Local tomatoes are in the nursery and should go in this weekend. I am expanding the garden to triple its size and am hoping to have veggie independance by July 4

Oz your vegies look great good eating! The few I have left have been damaged from the frost they don't do well in 17*... But I will try again, can't help it

2014 will be our "year of the garden"

Now that I have employed Aljay to assist Bernie, I am having his primary responsibility be the garden.

We built protection fences for the 30+ fruit trees we planted after New Year and has cleaned up around the 20+ we had. Most are several years away from fruiting but we do have Mango, Papaya and limes so far.

I have never been able to get people enthusiastic about veggie gardens till half way through 2013. Mrs Oz and the nannies planted a garden in the Rental we had in Cavite and within 8 weeks were harvesting. Bernie and Analou now see the food they are producing and a light went off.

I have researched a lot of seeds that will grow in the tropics so that I can bring my veggie desires to them. I have some nice looking tomato seeds that supposed to do well in tropical weather, along with melons, squash from the carribean, okra from texas, all sorts of collards and kale. I hope to do several small plantings to evaluate the different types so we can work out what will do well.

The local tomatoes, bitter melon and egg plant will keep them amused til I get there. Alja is working on 6 more beds 20 yards x 1 yard.

Good for you Oz. I really admire what you're dong. I think I was the first to respond when you started a thread asking if you were crazy for wanting to bring different breeds to the Philippines.

I've been the only gardener, chicken keeper (or any other outdoor activity here forever. I think I'm going to have at least one apprentice this spring/summer. Even If I only have one, that will allow me time to do infrastructure and construction improvements. I think I'll advertise for a few others. I'm jazzed for spring.

Advertising for "interns" to learn sustainable living could make your life easier.

You may be surprised how many you get.

People will even pay to learn how to grow a garden.

I'm tired of the cold.

One of my technicians told me this morning she'll be breaking up with her BF and today was trying to come up with a "slogan" for her match.com profile. I couldn't come up with a good one for her (that she approved of) but I immediately thought of one for me. It made all of my technicians giggle (and agree):

I'm hen pecked, and you will be, too.

What would you choose for yourself?

Oz I think it is great what all you do to help the people there! You will be blessed 10 fold for all you do for others! And I would love to see pics of your gardens this year and all your fruit trees.
It is nice that you got Bernie some help.
I am still trying to think of a few more trees to add to my orchard. I am thinking pomegranite, apricot and idk what else. Maybe a banana tree.

If i had four seasons i would grow lots of stone fruits, The best peach I have ever eaten was in North West PA.

We have a vast array of tropical fruit trees that people have never heard of.

I love looking at the tropical nursery sites in USA to discover African and Central American plants that have yet to be commonplace in the Phils. I will try and grow a half a doz new fruit trees from seed.

I did not mention our mulberry tree. Mrs Oz planted it next to the bathroom of Bernie's and its now producing lots of fruit. I bought a little pectin to make jome tropical jams this year. I will start selling them at the end of summer as my bags come back from the phils empty.

We have a huge old mulberry that came with the house. Some of the branches almost touch the ground. When they ripen we put sheets under them and shake the branches...any we miss gets eaten by the chickens.
