The Old Folks Home

I have some good news..and Areille will know that it is something we've been waiting to hear.

We had a daughter show up a couple of weeks ago during the evening with some really sad news. That she has cancer. Now how in the world can that turn into good news? Well, it was stage 2 Melanoma..first they found it was cancer after cutting the mole out. Then they had to cut a big size piece of area with the lymph nodes to make sure that it hadn't spread there. If so, she would need Chemo. The test results are back, and there was no sign of it in the lymph nodes! That's the good news! She has two more that look like the one they removed, so, she will have those removed and tested also. She had come by to tell us the news about her, but the dr. highly suggested that everyone in the family go be seen and checked. One son had one taken off of his face. No news yet from that one. Our son in GA. has two that he was actually watching..because they were changing. He is going in on the 3rd to have them looked at. This can be a genetic thing, not just a .. too long in the sun thing. All of the kids are going in..My DH is going in on the 13th. I've been watching a couple on his back.
Check for moles, you never know, but it's one of those cancers, if you catch it early enough, you should be fine! Thank the Lord!
Wow

I am so glad they found it early

Our prayers go out to your family

Thank you so much for sharing this!

Skin Cancer is much more complicated then simply staying out of the sun. We stay out of the sun so much now that children are getting rickets! and now we find out that it is mostly a genetic condition and staying out of the sun does not help.

It is especially bad for those with Red Hair.

I put the game cam in the bathroom to find out that it was my female cat. She's still using the sink, but right now that's actually good so I can monitor her blood loss. Never thought I'd be encouraging the cat to pee in the sink.

The blood seems to be reducing in quantity. The vet treated them both just to be safe (again last night we could only guess which one it was).
I hope she will be ok.

Don't I know about it.

My son had a melanoma removed last year - he's a redhead. The doctor told him it was genetic, so he more or less feels he doesn't need sunblock - he'd get it regardless. This is why parents go gray. I told him there are other types he could get and to use the sunblock especially on face, nose, ears, scalp (he shaved his head) etc. I have his aunt and uncle reminding him every chance they get.

I noticed something that looked like "powdery mildew" - on my brothers arm and kept after him - reminding him how long he had it and it hadn't gone away. He finally went in and was quick to tell me it' wasn't cancer ' but it was pre-cancerous, he had the doctor remove it since he was already there.

I'm a terrible "picker," you know pimples, scabs, etc. etc. I couldn't see anything but, felt something on my nose and kept bothering it till the top layer of skin scratched off leaving a very small reddened depression. I showed it to my doctor every time I came in (for other things) and he never thought anything about it. Even though I told him it wouldn't close up. I got caught up in usual family drama and forgot about it.

Last October I realized it still hadn't healed in a year. I made an appointment with another doctor(same office) she wasn't impressed either till I kept insisting that it was like that for a full year. She checked the record from the first doctor and he hadn't even made any
notation . She went off to consult with someone and came back with a referral sheet to take to a dermatologist.

The dermatologist did a biopsy and said it appeared to be a basal cell carcinoma. A few days later the results confirmed it and I was scheduled for mohs surgery 2 days before Thanksgiving. It was out patient surgery but, for mohs, the procedure can be very time consuming and worrisome. After removing the first layer, he said I had just a bit more, so a second layer was removed. The second
biopsy revealed clear margins - so it was stitched up and I was sent home. The procedure was pretty much painless. Well...... it was until the ' local' wore off. Then It was very painful that day but, the next day I felt much better.

The doctor said it was basal cell with squamous characteristics. Meanwhile I have to keep it covered or bandaged when I am outside. I am scheduled to see him the end of April - at that time he'll tell me if I can go back to using sunblock when I am outside.

Of course I am very upset that my family doctor didn't think it was important - I could have had the surgery done a year sooner. The dermatologist accepted medicare but, NOT my secondary insurance., so that was a big expense I had to deal with. I know skin cancers tend to reoccur so besides worrying about that, have to worry about paying for more.Somehow I have no faith in the administration's health care.

People please use sunblock, wear wide brimmed hats outside, sunglasses, long sleeved shirts whenever possible and keep track of any spots, pimples anything that do not go away or change. As am adult I followed that regimen but, as a child and into my 20's I had several bad sun burns. In my day - people splashed on baby oil or tanning lotion -sun burns & peeling were just something painful that you had to deal with. No one knew back then what the sun was really capable of doing to us.

I have to add that when I go out with the nose bandage, people come up to me and say they had the same thing. They just 'know'. One nice lady even told me I'd be okay. Most people share their experience - which I appreciate. It's good to know you aren't the only one.

Diva, I am so glad you are ok! It is a pain when we have to fight with our doctors to tell them we know something is wrong and they don't listen to us!
I hope and pray that you and your family will not have any more of these to have to deal with.

I use to sun bathe all the time in Calif. But now I try to stay out of the sun so much. But now I get a vitamin "D" deficiency from not getting enough sun. We all need some sun.
But sunblock is very important to all of us!

SCG hope your cat is doing better.

I know what it's like. When I raised dogs , one would always come down with an ailment that the vet "had never seen before." That usually meant the dog would get well on his own but, I'd still have a hefty bill for confusing the vet.

People said I was imaging things because I watched them too closely. That's right, I noticed when Dee Dee's muzzle swelled up, huge- she seemed fine otherwise but.... the vet said either she snuffed up something that didn't belong in her nose or it was just an allergy. Close enough right.?

Multiply that by several dogs and puppies and the vet should have installed a revolving door for us.

I will be changing vets (I haven't liked them for years but it never escalated to me leaving) since this event. Not that they misdiagnosed, but they called me yesterday and told me a couple falsehoods and something silly: 1. that if the antibiotic hadn't worked by 0600 when I left for work yesterday that it wasn't going to work 2. that the antibiotic they gave my cat lasted only 3 days and that 3. I needed to bring the cat in since she wasn't better, but that they didn't have any appointments available.

I disagreed with #1 but did not feel the need to explain to the tech why a miracle cure wouldn't be happening in 8 hours. #2 I strenuously disagreed with and did explain half lives of drugs to her (quickly) and #3 just irritated me.

SCG, sure hope your kitty will be ok. Is it a male by chance? They tend to get the infections more than the females. Also, certain cat foods have more ash in them..not good for the kitty's kidneys. Your vet may have you put your cat on a different diet. Good luck!

I have a boy and a girl, it's the girl that's got the issue. I'm hoping it's not stones.

Quote: Hi Cynthia! I did the fodder last winter....but am totally out of fodder seed this year. Not to mention, it is the deep freezes that has killed everything off this year. Even in my potting shed, where I grew the fodder last year. I had been grown green manure this winter for fodder.....turnips, mustard, some sort of spinach greens, but these last 2 deep freezes just finished it all off out in the garden. All they have left is whatever kitchen scraps I can put out for them. Does not go far with 14 LF birds. I do manage to feed them banana once in a while..but even then...they want to go scratch and miss free ranging. Dang hawks. The main flock does well free ranging on their own...sans neighborhood dogs. I have to watch for them. The other 2 ...in the chicken tractor...are the two that the hawk attacked on Thanksgiving. They refuse to free range if I am not within their line of sight. As soon as they think I am inside...the run for their tractor. We are just ready for spring.

SCG- I have been dealing with a sick cat also, but for another reason. I found her thursday at noon, heavily drooling from her mouth and somewhat lethargic. I thought she had ingested some toxic house plant or maybe a pill that could have fallen on the floor. She was just sick. I tried to take her to the vet, but they are closed Thursdays after 12, so I wasn't sure if I needed to make her vomit or not.
The vet called me back at least, and recommended I irrigate her mouth with warm water. I did that 3x. Seemed to help a little, but she vomited the next morning.
I took her in. she has an upper resp going on. So she got an antibiotic shot. Worked like a miracle drug. Half an hour later...she was trying to talk me into letting her go outside, all while dismanteling the living room.

I have two male cats and one is healthy and a sleeper and the other is wildly funny and on the go but he is my problem child. Within a year of having him he had a respiratory infection. The only sign was he was hiding from us and look lethargic.....which is not typically Milo. Took him to the vet and $300 later he recovered We had read that once a cat has a respiratory infection they are susceptible to future ones. We have had 4 cats during our 28 years of marriage and this is the only one that had this problem. Well last spring he got another along with a urinary tract infection. Don't know which issue triggered the other. Again, I could tell he was lethargic and hiding again. Took him to the vet paid another huge bill, had to purchase special food to get him to eat since he would not. Finally recovered. and doing fine. I just wish I knew if there was a way to prevent them.

Milo our crazy problem child

Oliver our healthy sleeper in his favorite position.....it must be true when they say sleep is important to your health...Oliver is the poster child.
