The Old Folks Home

I like that nickname.

How is everyone in the south doing after that storm? We're getting it today, around 14 inches of snow then some sleet/ice on top of it (better than on the bottom), but we're so much better equipped to deal with it than you are.

Well, the kids have been out of school since Tuesday because they was a chance we might get snow or ice (never happened). Today there is finally a reason for them to be home. We got about 6 inches of snow last night. I know some places just call that "winter" but as we demonstrated so well 2 weeks ago, as little as 2 inches can cause complete chaos. Unlike 2 weeks ago this snow should be mostly gone by the end of the day - headed for a high of around 46 today.

So far we have had so much artic mess that three of my roosters now have frostbite on their combs. I put vaseline on them and had a heat lamp in the coop, it did not help.
I am now thinking of getting some Buckeyes so I won't have to deal with frostbite.
I have
Orps- frostbiten
Welsummer- frostbitten
BA - frostbitten

The only one of my roosters that does not have frostbite is my EE rooster. lol
That is kind of why I am thinking of Buckeye's, they have the same combs. lol

What do ya'll think?
I don't get too worried about a bit of frostbite anymore.

Oh boy, look at what I am considering keeping. I have her here, a Great Dane. 4 months old. Blue Fawn in coloring. She is so laid back, just laying down beside me right now.
Oh what a sweetie!! I love quiet dogs!! And big enough to hug.

Quote: My rotties didn't run around, but they sure plopped on the couch!

Quote: Sound like a wonderful dog to have. I love large dogs!
I like anything big enough that I can't trip over it. Dang I send the cats flying, poor things, Guess that is why they prefer the counters now.

A local fellow breeds them, a small dane, and they are wonderful dogs, especially his assitance dog. Quiet and laid back like my rotties.

I have my buckeyes ordered. THe number of roosters with single combs and frost bitten is sad-- Though I have others, the BCM, that had frost bite in the past and arenot have a problem this year!!

Quote: MY kids are home-- school called it early yesterday evening and didn't keep us waiting until the usual 5:30am phone calls. Am worried about tomorrow though--maybe a delay-- then they are Feb vaca here.

Quote: I'm sure I would n't be up for that kind of activity if I was in pain, too.

Ron, how are you feeling?

I have a couple broodies, now. One's a cornish that's about the craziest chicken I've ever met. If I so much as peer into her nest box she comes immediately flying out, just a mass of feathers, beak and claws right at your face. And then next door to her is my GLW whose sense of seasons is all messed up - she only wants to hatch in the dead of winter. Wonder if this means spring is finally coming or that we're only halfway through winter.

x2 I hope you get feeling better soon Ron.
Thanks!

I am fine today. I Made sure to not do too much last night. They layer flock has already responded nicely to the Frontline treatment--Layed about double the eggs yesterday.

I will be finishing up with treating the coops this weekend.

Not that I've seen, My BCM's are as busy with the hens as before, Havn't done a 'bator test yet.

It seems like light and combs has something to do with fertility. Penedesencas are said to be this way.

You are in a relatively mild climate though.
Me too! We have a lot of days of sun here.
