The Old Folks Home

Hello, all! It's spring - Spring Break, even. Woke up to ice on the windshield and the boys' impromptu camping adventure ended sometime during the night with all coming inside to get warm.

We have plans for a campout on the river later in the week, but the forecast calls for cold nights and rain......

I was going to say...take the Deet! Until I read cold nights and rain! Shucks!!

That table looks great, KingFrodo! I don't think you need much of a reason beside that SHE HAS CHICKS! LOL!

Camping is in my near future too, Wisher! But I agree with the boys, cold nights are bad for camping! Unless you plan to do a lot of cuddling, lol!

I love tent camping but someone please help me.
What is the attraction to camping in the summer?
I've camped my whole life but maybe 10% of the time was in summer.
I don't like sweating and bugs. What is summer? Sweating and bugs.
I can go camping in late fall, early spring, even winter. I can always wear more clothes. I have warm sleeping bags. I can stay warm in cool/cold weather and enjoy nature without crowds.
In summer, there's nothing I can do to keep from sweating or dealing with bugs and crowds.
I prefer to enjoy nature in cold weather without all the people, bugs and sweat.

I took my daughter on a 4 day canoe river camp trip when she was 4. It was summer. Even on a spring fed river in the middle of the night, it was ungodly hot in our bivouac-lite tent. It started raining so I closed up the fly. We laid there a while and she finally said, "daddy, I'm so hot, I don't know what to do". I said, "well I guess we'll just get wet". I opened up the fly and the rain came in on our faces, it was slight relief.

With the proper sleeping bag, nighttime is comfortable regardless of temperature - except summer.

I don't think the hubby would go for that...Plus, I'm not big on animals in the house. It's all I can do to handle the dog in the house.

I knew we were kindred spirits, Fro, I am in the same boat. I love the little dog, but I really wish (there I go again) that it lived outside! I hate the hair that gets all over my clothes, especially the black polyester. It gripes me that it jumps on the couch, bed, and sometimes the table

and don't even mention when there is an "accident!"

You should have seen the looks on their faces when I was telling them how to best keep warm, using combined body heat, by zipping the sleeping bags together. LOL! They didn't like the idea too much!

I'm with you, Canoe! I refuse to be hot in a tent, so I won't go once nighttime temps are above 70. I really don't want to be wet either, so rain in the forecast will make me cancel. I want to teach the boys to camp, but I am too old to be ready to really rough it. At the river, my brother has a drive-to lot where he built a pavillion. It has a huge covered deck and has a small 10x12 room on the side with a window unit AC, trundle bed, and a bathroom! I plan to take the boys and let them set up tents, but I will be in that room on the couch! My DH refuses to voluntarily sleep anywhere but in his bed, so it's up to me to go with the boys. It is far enough out in the boonies that I don't want them there alone, but I can be comfortable enough in that room. That will let me teach them about camp site prep, cooking over a fire, and safety - but will mean I will be comfortable while sleeping.

~~Saturday was such a tease here in Lower Alabama. It was 78 and sunny all day. I finished my refurbished old door coffee table and got it in the house. I used the milk paint I bought earlier this year up in Birmingham when I went to see Wisher. I'm trying to think of another excuse to head back up there and get more chicks.
If u decide to take the trip, i want 2 black orps, 2 of her ees, and 2 dark layers like a bcm or something. I live close to ozark but dont see being able to make it to tuscaloosa any time soon. I would gladly help pay for ur gas as well

Well ,what happened to the nice warm days. The last 2 here has been sunny ,But very cool.Hubby is out plowing our garden. It finally got dry enough for that.I think they may be talking snow for northern Ky. tonight. They can keep it. I am so ready for Spring.
Wisher ,If DH complains about house being a mess.It is all your fault. I am still reading the TGESE thread. And you have posted several times to sit on hand .So you can't mess with the EGGS. :) I sure hope I have some success.
