Ooooh
Ahhhh
Awww!

Love me some little pink piggie pics, and congrats on the poults and ducklings! Did you do anything special with the turkey eggs? So far they've been a complete fail for me.

...

ChickenCanoe, I got a chuckle out of your daughter's snack selections and her comment about when not to shop :) Been guilty of the same in the past!

Your comment about how food is made into pellets and then crumbles interested me, I didn't realize (I don't know why, I guess I never really thought it through) something had to be added to get the ground grains into pellet form. I have been meaning to go back to fermenting or at least soaking for months, and now that it's getting warmer I have to get on it. SO much waste - cleaned out pens last weekend and OMG, one pen was more food that bedding and droppings.

Yeah, I've cleaned out those coops too. The feed manufacture process can be pretty complex. Especially when it comes to pelletizing and crumbling.
Mash is a little simpler. They basically clean, weigh, grind, mix, toast or steam, cool, dry, fill bulk trucks, they drive to the farms, unload and the commercial chickens get much fresher feed than we feed ours.
Usually things like soy meal is precooked as part of the oil extraction process.
To make pellets, the grind isn't as fine and the binding agent is added to the mix. It has to encapsulate all the particles so when it is run through the pelletizer, they stick together. Then to make crumbles, the pellets are run through a crumbler.
The menu of ingredients that have to go into poultry food is complex too. Weird things one wouldn't suspect, like ferrous sulfate, which comes from the pickling process in sheet steel manufacture is added to provide iron.
I once did an install of enzyme tanks at turkey mills around Arkansas and Missouri to inject a bit of an enzyme in the mix so turkeys could better utilize the protein present in corn thereby they could use less soy, making the feed cheaper to produce.

You've heard of Hanoi Jane?
This is Hanoi Hannah.
I guess she's clubbing before her bay cruise.

Next day.

Motza is awesome.
You have such clean pigs. Are they Chester whites or Yorkshires? Sorry, it's been about 50 years since I had pigs.
We had both of those, as well as Poland Chinas, Hampshires, Berkshires and Durocs,

Your daughter is just neat :) I am grateful you and she have given us this bird's eye view of her trip. I am one of many who will never see that part of the world in person, and I have so enjoyed seeing it from her perspective.

One of her Brit friends that was with her there that night posted
"~ hannah showing us all up with her dance moves"

She's been dancing since she was 4 - everything from lyrical and ballet to jazz and hip hop.
She was in 2 semi professional dance companies - one in Chicago and one in St. Louis.

They kick off the festivities at First Night as the opening act.
She's the one on the left at the beginning with the waist length black hair and the back center at the 1:50 mark.

In this video, she's the one on the right with the black jacket, pink skirt and white knee socks.

Here, she's the one at the back left at the beginning of the video.

Waist length dark hair at the beginning of this video

White neckerchief at the 1 minute mark.

Green shirt longest hair.

She's introduced at the 3:55 mark here back in 2007

She was one of the top hip hop dancers in St. Louis. I've been told by my son and his friends, she always wins dance-offs at nightclubs.
She was the poster child for St. Louis Grand Center's 'Dancing in the Streets' festival for 3 years. I'll try to scan the poster and post it.
The poster was on all the lamp posts in the Grand Center area and bus stop shelters all over town.

Congratulations Chickadoodles, and bunnylady on your new badges! I got another chick, and one pipping now. YAAAY! Went to the doctor yesterday. Doctor, and DH got very angry with me. DH has cooled off some. I go for all the testing tomorrow. I am praying my lymph receptors/nodes are fine.
