The Old Folks Home

I knew someone earlier in my life who used to think up things to put on his gravestone - such as, Here Lies John Smith. I'm finally down to a weight I can live with. Or, his personal favorite, Here Lies John Smith. So What.

Just wanted to share an experience far less grand and glorious than recent photo shoots, hikes, safaris, or even kids/grandkids/chicks. It just makes me giggle when I think about it.

John The Contractor has sensitive hearing. He wears earplugs AND headset style ear protectors when he uses power equipment. He also plays music pretty loud at work sites. When I am present, he turns the music down so we can talk when he's not running saws or nail guns.

He had just pulled off the ear protection to tell me something, standing next to the first coop. Several of the roosters chose that moment to crow in unison. He clapped his hands over his ears and kinda, sorta swore from the unexpected barrage of sound. Then he leaned around the corner to peer into the closest coop window. He "bokked" loudly through the screen.

Of course, all roosters stopped mid-crow, subsiding into smatterings of much quieter clucks.

John turned back to me to say, matter of factly, "Yeah, they understand 'bokka bokka.'"

Okay, guess y'all hadda been there. Guy in construction coveralls, communicating with my noisy roosters...... speaking Bokka.
You need to keep this one!! He knows how to talk to Roo's!!

My personal favorite is..... "I told you I was sick."
Almost 18 years ago, I made a crack along these lines to my obstetrician. I was a few days past my due date when I was awakened in the middle of the night by what I eventually realized were contractions. After half an hour or so of noting the duration and timing, I put in a call to my doctor. I apologized for waking him at such an unreasonable hour, and reported what I had noted. He didn't seem too impressed, and made some comment to the effect that, if it were a bit later in the morning, he'd have suggested that I take a walk around the block and see what happened. "Oh, Heavens. Every other person in this neighborhood has a dog," I said. "If I took a walk now, I'd wake the entire neighborhood!" Since I had an appointment with him at around 11 anyway, I told him to sleep well, and I'd see him later.

I knew I wasn't going back to sleep, but since my husband was still asleep, I tried not to make any noise as I counted and waited and wondered . . . .

When dawn began to lighten the sky, I got dressed, and went out to feed the rabbits. I couldn't avoid waking my husband, who decided this was the best time to take our dogs for a walk in the field across from our house. A couple of the contractions were strong enough that I had to lean against a rabbit hutch until they passed, but I got the chore done and went back in the house. For some reason, my husband then decided that he needed to make a run to the grocery store a few blocks away. "Hurry back," I said softly, as he walked out the door. When he got back, my suitcase was sitting by the door. "Are you sure? You don't want to hang about the hospital forever, you said." "Yep, I'm sure. It's time."

By now, it was around 8 o'clock in the morning, and we had to deal with rush hour traffic. I got hit with a wave of nausea which didn't make the ride any easier, too. We got to the hospital at about 8:45; the doctor arrived at about 9:30, and the baby arrived at about 10:15. The doctor and I agreed that we might as well consider the appointment cancelled, and as he started to head to the office to see to what was left of his morning schedule, I caught his eye and grinned at him. "See, I told you I was up to something."

The surgery went well. The pain is tolerable, with the meds. the doctor gave me. They make me sleep a lot. DH went to the coop with me today, and made sure I didn't lose my balance, or overdo. He was actually very helpful. He's had to fend for himself some by getting himself something to eat. He fixed me a sandwich earlier too. I'm just not very hungry. The brooder has been cleaned, and replenished, so all is well in my world. Thank you so much for all the prayers, and positive thoughts.
