Love the idea of grafting...my FIL had a tree on his front lawn that was like apples, pears, etc....never tried it.
I did try trimming a tree (Dolgo crabapple) I planted here in the veg garden as an espalier...
It is beginning to bloom right now, so won't do any pruning but I see it is getting leggy again and needs a hair cut.
Rick has the Hatch House insulated...
and vapour barriered...got the plywood and the tools hauled down there also.
He did up the last of the Birch rounds he brought home last winter...nice big pile.
I have another pile of firewood to move as I see it is in the way now that the Parking building has been final mapped out as to where it will be.
Snow I hear East of us...it was slightly above freezing last night and I hear tonight it will freeze--cover up my tender porch plants.
Bought a nifty watering can for ten bucks and stuck some RAT stickers on it to personalize it. I had my R A T scanned and made into stickers some ten years or so ago.
Got a Chocolate Mint plant to complete the planting. I am more a "fruit" flavour gal but I do like my chocolate when it's ducks, plants, eggshells...
Found some Haskaps at the local grocery (amazing!) and bought two pots of it...has a main Honeyberry and a companion cultivator I am thrilled all to pieces! Doubt I will see them flower this year and certainly NO fruit but planning ahead for next year...yee haw! Plant is from Russia, related to honeysuckles (called edible honeysuckle by some), and seems to be thriving here nicely. I love finding tough but kewl plants that do well where we reside.
Did some spring cleaning (or is that winter unpacking and distribution?) and sorted thru some antiquey vintage "junk" we have and working at setting it up so it is a nice "display" instead of looking like a pile of junk.
Wish organizing and displaying was as easy as getting Vanna White (Fixins) to pose for a clicky photo.
She is always ready to sidle in and sit pretty with a big cheesy smiley for the BIRDY!
There are branding irons in there, sharpening stone and stand, wringer washer, cream can, wooden boxes for ammo and Canada Dry, some old chicken feeders/waterers AND in the very center of the photo is the little sled I use to hitch up to our Golden Lab when the rare event of snow happened on the WEsT Coast where I grew up. I'm old, so the sled jest HAS to be vintage by now...tee hee... I'm old & more useless but that lil' sled may have increased in value!
Stupid internet server is still bogged down...it is cloudy, overcast, cold and windy, and even then the campers are still stealing my share of the access time...oh well. Fudge on thru it.
Glad I am busy with other things not to notice I can't get online much. Hee hee
Veg garden is starting to come together...nothing green up yet but need to be patient! Got alot of my dingbat ornaments out and about...it'll grow up and make it so these items compliment the "decor" but for now it sedates my need to SEE something out in the dirt besides rocks. LOL
Grow dang it all...GROW! You got TWO months to GROW!
Dragon Fly...I bin thinking of your handle and thought I would post on here today some of my own dragon flies...I was born in the year of the Dragon and always had a liking for them winged big bugs...those buzzy Dragonflies have always been facsinating! I almost (came real close!), almost had Purple Martin Houses put up that is until I heard their favourite food is to EAT DRAGON FLIES! Well I freaked out...no way am I going to encourage something that eats my big buzzy bugs on those glitter wings.
Rubberized Dragonfly stepping "stones" for my veg garden.
Widdle holder for my garden trimming knives...real bright colours on the handles hoping I don't set one down and "lose it" only to find it later, stuck in my foot!
Dragonfly solar lights...this one is getting on but still works.
Doggone & Chicken UP!
Tara Lee Higgins
Higgins Rat Ranch Conservation Farm, Alberta, Canada
Adorable turkey and babies. And such a beautiful rose Cynthia. Tara I like your crabapple tree. I would like to do one that has like 4-5 varieties of crabapples on it. I like to graft and I experiment with what ever I can find. lol
Tara, I love the dragonflies you have collected! I've always had a thing for them myself. I'll have to look for my cool things tomorrow. Those and frogs! Love my frogs. That Higgins Rat Ranch sticker is great! I need to make some "Red Gate" stickers (that's what we call the farm we live on because of the red gate out front, and by farm I mean there's acreage, mostly woods, and a nice sized area with raised beds...plus my chickens now!). The hatch house is coming along nicely. Waiting on my garden to sprout was very trying for me too! I did buy some plants already started, so that helped my want to see green!
Yay, dsqard! What cute babies!
I'm so sorry to hear that, insanity! Don't give up! Take that killer out!
I just lugged the window A/C unit into place and turned it on. It's ten PM and 81 degrees in the house! Cooler outside than in.
The House Chickens are holding their wings away from their bodies and Sparkle's four chicks sleep with their necks stretched out along the HC blanket next to her, not under her fluff.
Panting HCs spurred me to setting up the A/C unit - the fan in the bedroom was sufficient for my cooling needs thus far this year. I would have set it up before too long.....
But the flock chickens in coop are more comfortable than the HCs.
