The Old Folks Home

This is my first thread of the day. And it took me 45 min to catch up. First, somebody put a FB site on and I was diverted 20 min. and another posted about traps and I spent MORE time looking around. Finally I'm caught up and happy. Good morning, everybody, I hope your day is going as well as mine. I'm old and the aches and pains are getting worse, but I have been doing a lot of heavy lifting and toting. Gonna take it easy until time to put out ice for the babies.

Guilty on both counts.

My son lived in a 100+ year old building in an apartment above a store front. Made about 40 trips carrying heavy things down a steep narrow staircase. Moved him into our 111 year old house making about 40 trips carrying heavy things up a steep narrow staircase. I thought I'd be sore but I'm fine. I was a bit stiff when we pulled into our driveway but I guess the climbing was just what I needed to loosen up.

When he moved into the apartment he had to throw away the new queen sized box spring cause it wouldn't make the turns up the stairs.

Predators are a big problem this year it seems. BYCrs in Northern California are losing chickens to fox attacks, Hawks, Bobcats, skunks and of course Raccoons. Remember those beautiful Pita Pintas? A person here picked up two from me and they wound up being a Pullet and a Cockerel. They are under 6 weeks old and still mostly white. She has been letting them free range un attended. The Cockerel is now Hawk Food.

The comment was that it was an acceptable sacrifice because it would be cruel to not let the chickens free range. I guess that is fine but Pita Pintas? They are on the endangered list and a very rare breed.

I know, they aren't mine any more but it is hard to let go....

Cruel or not, they should not be out if predators can get them. I will not be letting my babies roam free. It's not cruel if they have a good space and lots of company. Mine are happy chickens.

That's tough. That was why I was happy to have a lot of flocks of Black Penes. From 50-100 birds at any one time. But now they're under lock and key till I can get numbers up again. It's especially stressful being down to one rooster. I never wanted to have less than 5 just for the predator reason.

I went years while losing only about 2 birds during the day to wild predators.(except for the neighbors dogs)

I read a post once about a person feeling sad seeing her Barred rocks locked up in the run as she left for work. She thought it through and realized that is was not cruel to leave them penned and safe--that it would be cruel to let them be eaten.

I hope you get them back up soon!

It just makes sense that if a monster lives under there, it won't venture out enough to get you as long as you're on top of the bed and under the covers. There are monsters in closets too.

Demented minds think alike.

As a kid I got hooked on "Dark Shadows"..... Mistake. I slept with the light on in my closet for a whole summer because I was pretty sure the vampires were going to come in via the attic access.

Jonathan Frid.... (shudder....)

I live in town and my chickens cannot free range. They have never free ranged, so can't miss what they haven't never had. They have a very large run and are very secure and seem quite happy.

As a child, I was never afraid of monsters under my bed, but scared to look out the window at night. I had a dream as a child that I got up to look out the window, and a huge malformed bear was looking in at me. Still kinda freaks me out to look out a window or door late at night.

I'm curious about when kids get this idea about bed monsters.

When I was little, I rolled out of bed.

A lot.

A lot of the time, I would keep rolling until I hit something - the leg of a chair, the wall . . . .

If I wound up under the bed, I'd often pull a blanket down and finish the night right there.

Many a morning, my mother came in and found me waaayy back under the bed, wrapped up in a blanket. She'd have to drag me out by the blanket or else I had to inch my way out.

A few years later, there was a monster under my bed too.

Maybe it was me?

Joke of the day

EVER SINCE I WAS A CHILD, I'VE ALWAYS HAD A FEAR OF SOMEONE UNDER MY BED AT NIGHT. SO I WENT TO A SHRINK AND TOLD HIM: I've got problems. Every time I go to bed I think there's somebody under It. I'm scared. I think I'm going crazy.

Just put yourself in my hands for one year, said the shrink. Come talk to me three times a week and we should be able to get rid of those fears.
How much do you charge...
Eighty dollars per visit, replied the doctor.
I'll sleep on it, I said.
Six months later the doctor met me on the street. Why didn't you come to see me about those fears you were having? He asked.
Well, Eighty bucks a visit, three times a week for a year, is $12,480.00. A bartender cured me for $10.00. I was so happy to have saved all that money that I went and bought me a new pickup truck.
Is that so, he said, with a bit of an attitude, and how, may I ask, did a Bartender cure you?
He told me to cut the legs off the bed. Ain't nobody under there now.

FORGET THE SHRINKS..
HAVE A DRINK & TALK TO A BARTENDER!
IT'S ALWAYS BETTER TO GET A SECOND OPINION

baawwwwhhhhhhh!!!!!

My monsters lived under the bed also. But all my kids monsters lived in the closets. I wonder why?

Good morning to you also. I just spend 1 1/2 hrs. scrubbing water buckets and feeding and I am wore out. I will check eggs later and turn the sprinklers on for the birds.

I am sorry Ron.

I know that is hard, I sold an Amerauca cockerel to a couple and the next time I saw them they told me they did not have him any more that he was dog food.
