The Old Folks Home

The same gene that causes the crest feathers on the Silkie, Polish, etc. also causes what they call a vaulted skull. The skull is arched upward, and there actually are gaps in it. Birds that have one copy of the crested gene don't have much of either a vault or a crest; birds with two copies have a lot more. If you breed two birds with small crests together, you can get some offspring that have bigger crests, but they also have the vaults, too. Because there are gaps in the bone of the skull, these birds are more vulnerable to brain injury from the pecks of other birds (this is something I learned the hard way).

I did not know that but one of my Silkie babies was born either without the back of it's skull or maybe the others pecked the skin off while it was hatching. IDK The baby didn't make it but before it died it looked like the swelling or whatever was getting better. I had put it in with the others to see how they would do and before I could stop it, one grabbed it by the head and pulled. I don't know if the baby would have made it before that happened or not but I did read that this does happen because the heat in the incubator gets too high in the first 6 days. I didn't think it got high enough to do that but all the others were/are fine.

Three pups left to sell. Godlendoodles..they are soo cute. I'm having fun with them now. Their eyes are opening, and ears.

She only had 4 this time around...so glad! There was so much going on at the same time there for a while. She will be spayed in Oct. 2 litters is plenty. The little black boy is sold. Going to a family that lost their black Goldendoodle this yr. The kids were so excited..well, not sure who was more excited, the little girls, or the dad. Their dog went everywhere with him..a farmer.

The crested gene in ducks is a lethal gene, because the birds that get 2 copies of it generally have a hole in the back of their heads. Some just fail to hatch, others, well, you have to "do something about."

For this reason, people who breed crested varieties of duck usually put a non-crested male with crested females, or vice versa. It doesn't always work, because apparently some ducks can have the crested gene, and not have visible crests.

Soooo adorable!

Yes Bunny, so glad that I had one for them. He even has the little bit of white on the chest like their dog. I told them, they will be two different personalities. They know, but are excited for him.

Puppies! Puppies!! Puppies!!!!

Gotta love 'em.... Well, okay, it wasn't so far back that I can't recall the joys (not) of being the Official Pee Monitor. Puppies require A LOT of paper towels....

But, honestly, too cute!

I had a easter egger rooster in the hen run last year and he mated one of my andalusians and I did not think about it. I hatched out some of the hens eggs and one turned out to be a andalusian pullet with a rose comb she is very pretty and lays a white egg.

I would really like to see a picture of her, if you wouldn't mind?

Make sure it is a poultry genetics class. They are different, as an example, Hens determine boy or girl offspring.
Is there any other information to go with that bit of knowledge Ron?

Look up ZZ-ZW instead of XX-XY.

The hens ovum determines gender.

ZZ-ZW system
In some birds, butterflies, moths, and other organisms, the female is the heterogametic sex. These females are designated ZW, while the males are ZZ.
