LOCKDOWN!

Had a butterfingers moment with one of the Welsummers during lockdown setup. No cracked shell, but the egg took a pretty good rap. Darn! I'm hoping for at least a pair of pullets per breed, but my egg loss rate has been stupendous this hatch. Hope they all hatch and no bad damage done. We'll know at the end of this weekend.

Good luck, Little Eggies. You're on the last leg of your journey to chickdom. Fare well! (NOT Farewell)
Good luck on your hatch!

I have a few of my Welsumer eggs going into lockdown this morning. Hoping they will all hatch!

Deb, I really like your cart.

What breed(s) was your dog? Our older lab has a very similar face and build.

The pound said she was part Shepherd and part Greyhound. My guess was it was Australian Shepherd not German Shepherd. No Lab influence at all because I could free feed her.

She was about 35 pounds and even in her later years kept her girlish figure. Her muzzle was black till she turned about fifteen then it started greying. If you looked at her at a glance in the Chaparal she looked fleetingly like a Coyote. But her coat was Brindle... like a Greyhound.

this is a view from the out house looking due South. The immediate horizon is the U.S. The distant mountain range is in Baja California. Those mountains are probably about fifty miles away. The acutal border from this point is only two miles away. There is BLM land beyond the immediate horizon BLM stands for Bureau of Land Management and it belongs to the government. For what its worth you can rent it for grazing land.

there are also railroad tracks that run through the BLM land parallel to the border. Long story as to why they arent used any more. But when I first moved in they had weekly runs that went into the Imperial valley and up to Campo. Hauling gravel.

Notice my gate.... All solid wood gates look like that here eventually. The wind rattles them off their hinges. Best gates are slatted or a frame with wire on them so the wind can go through. Same goes for Shed Doors and out house doors.....

The outhouse blew down about a year ago I need to build another. This time not a free standing box but one with substantial fence posts anchoring it.

Deb, in that picture she looks completely different.

How about a tornado proof concrete outhouse? Something shaped like a mayan pyramid. That kind of shape would probably work built from wood too.

Nice horse, nice rig, very cool house. Is that big horse a Percheron (sp)? Therefore the name? He's gorgeous! I just found out I can't ride anymore either due to deteriorating vertebrae. So sad! Sorry you lost all your animals and so horribly. Will you get more chickens? And maybe one of those big white dogs that scare coyotes away to guard your flock? : )
I love your cart it is very nice!

It would.... Concrete is difficult to do up here. My old one was probably twenty five years old or more. The place was built in 1984.... My ex roommate had a Big dog. Rhodesian Ridgeback. Probably a hundred pounds. She wasnt allowed in the house... poor thing. Not my rules. So in order to cool off she would dig holes in the shade during the day. Well she decided the outhouse was a great place to chill out. I suspect that was what put the chink in the foundation. We had a monster wind that year.

No the next one will be a tad bigger and rather than trying to put a door on it I will just put a sight guard or low fence so I can still appreciate the view but be screened if someone Pops out of the bushes. then anchored with either Tposts like on the fence in the back yard or chainlink fence posts with the walls built around them. Still thinking on that one. Oh and eight feet tall is too tall for here... Six would be plenty.

original out house

This one was simply open to a little pit. Nice to have in a pinch.

We have a outhouse at our cottage, it's built out of "light logs", basically like a log house, but with about 1" thick timber. I think it's pretty aesthetically pleasing, and by attaching some sort of diagonal braces, would probably withstand quite a lot of wind.

Unfortunately, that is so true.  The way kids are going at it these days,  if their child followed suit and then the grandchild did too........getting prego in their early teens.  So sad but true.  Have you seen those ignorant girls on Maury Povich and Jenny Jones, (she's not around anymore.)??
Hey, good news, I just found out there are bantam Ameraucanas!   You say, of course, stupid!  But I didn't know.  Can't wait to get some!!
