RIP 1953-2021
Deb, I really like your cart.
What breed(s) was your dog? Our older lab has a very similar face and build.
Have you seen my cart before? Its solid Hickory. I need to have the wheels worked over by a Wheel Wright. the lack of humidity here has shrunk the spokes and the wheels are loose on the hub now. Un-drivable that way. Matter of fact I need to diassemble the whole thing now and re finish with Tongue oil after a good sanding to smooth out the grain. Sadly its been stored outside for the past six months and what was left of the finish is bleached away.
All the joints are loose for the same reasons shrinking wood. So its just as well. I have some redesign to do on it anyway in order to make it more accessible.
I set it up to have a swingle tree attachment Which means the single tree is attached to the axel instead of the basket of the cart. What that does is make the single tree swing along with the traces, and allow the traces to be inline with the draft of the collar. Other wise I would have to hitch with a breast collar style harness.
people at the draft horse shows thought I was nutz... so be it. I want to make the basket easier to enter from the ground. So an easy entry conversion will require some steel to be manufactured. Something I know about.
So we will see.
