The Old Folks Home

We had a couple of weeks of colder weather, but it has warmed up a bit again. The dandelions seem to think it's spring again, because loads of their leaves have turned up in our lawn again. I did some weeding there today, and I have to say that I really like this weeding tool we bought this summer:

Super easy to use, you just push it down with your foot, tilt it to the size, lift it up and drop the weed by pushing the orange lever. You get the whole root with it, and it leaves most of the soil intact, just a little hole left where the weed used to live.

In chicken news, Emma has been checking out the nests more and more actively. I think today might finally be the day she lays her first egg.

There is nothing better than holding and loving a new little baby!

Holy mackerel you guys can chat.

I had a major crisis again with staff but it settled down today as a full contingency of reinforcements arrived.

Our new house girl can actually cook. I was getting really sick of chicken vindaloo that I whipped up a few days ago. I look forward to teaching her how to prepare some western dishes.

The municipal water was out for almost two days. The emergency tank does not produce enough pressure to get to the shower so we have been bathing Filipino style - a ladel and a bucket. I really appreciated the hot strong shower tonight.

Wow! I just watched the weather for the upcoming week and most of the U.S. Is in for a cool down. I guess fall is sorta on the way. The farmers almanac says down here fall will be cool with above average rain. That's for the south east anyway. I wonder what winter will be like this year?

Oz, you always get me thinking about jerry rigged ways to solve your problems. Now I'm picturing a barrel that you hoist up to a tree to get water pressure, painted black to heat the water up with sunlight.

Morning!
We went to town yesterday and we could see the trees are clearly beginning to step out of their quiet summer green dresses and slip into their bright amber and crimson party digs for the last big dance before they snuggle down under their thick white blankets for the long sleep.

This morning as I went to turn the girls out to play in the garden, overhead were the first real, noisy, V's of greater and lesser Canadian geese being pushed south by the cold front crawling in slowly from the far north. Today is beautiful! A crisp 45oF at sunrise but quickly warming to near 75oF by midday with a soft breeze. Perfect weather to finish the last of the outside painting. The rest of the week? More storms again late tomorrow and into Wednesday, then in comes the first real chill of autumn. Highs not to reach 50oF or so and our first season ending freeze by Thursday night with temps below 30o and again on Friday so no saving the gardens this time.

Busy days ahead!!! Hurry to help hubby finish painting the garden cottage, then harvest the drying herbs, pick the last of the tomatoes and squash and then get the plants buried in a nice warm "snuggie" of straw so they can be tarped ahead of the rain so they don't turn into "herbcicles" when the temps plummet. I know it will warm again and I want to give them more time in the garden before bringing the tender ones, such as my Lavender and Rosemary, inside for the winter or putting the others to bed. This will also ensure that I will still have another month at least of fresh sage, oregano and chives.

Time to grab my paintbrush get busy!!! Have a great week everyone!

Yep, our high will only be 92 for today.

Ahhh, showers are for sissies!

As hard as it is raining at my house right now, I doubt even a car wash could beat it. Just grab the soap and head out the door!
