The Old Folks Home

oh thank goodness! I was worried about them and being a new chicken owner molting is new to me
The chickens will do fine even if they molt in the winter.

Yes, a lot of new chicken owners think something is very wrong with the chickens the first time they molt.

Thank you for answering. I thought I had some kind of horrible disease runnin a muck or fixin to spend hours on disinfecting a coop lol. My ratio is one rooster to 8 hens but I just put the bantams in with the bigger chickens and my three bantam roosters are trying to have a little fun to.

Lol, mine are doing their first time molt as well...hideous looking girls! But they will soon be beautiful again :) I've up'd their protein a bit by adding wheat seeds & sprouts and adding split peas to their fermented feed, which they love. My vet suggested the extra protein during molt season.

Is this microphone on?

Bama, I used Spinosad for those terrible tomato worms! It's an organic pesticide that is a particular kind of bacteria, kills fire ants and fleas too, plus much more. Plus DE (diatomaceous earth) is great for lots of the grasshopper type, arthropod bugs. There's a few really good organic pesticides that work really well! Just put them on closer to dark so it doesn't kill the bees.
thanks. I just read about it and it sounds like good stuff. Where could i buy some and how much does it cost?[/quote]

There's this spray at Home Depot for $16 or you can get the concentrate from Amazon, lots of plant nurseries, and maybe even your local hardware store. I have an applicator bottle that I attach to a garden hose, just add a bit of spinosad, fill it up with water, and you have quite a bit that you can apply, plus the whole bottle of confederate left. People are realizing how good going organic is, so it's getting more popular and more places carry it.

And you are just too bad!

We had a really angry customer at work today. A head nurse talked to him yesterday, the patient advocate came in to see him early this morning and then after seeing the advocate the patient called the hospital directors office to continue to complain.

I got sent in at that point.

I came out with a "situation fixed, he's contented" progress report (complete with some good suggestions to make the place better) and a new friend.

I wouldn't divulge my secrets to senior management. Let them think I'm amazing.

Wait for it...

He has goats and chickens.

Amazing how much these little critters bond us no matter our differences.

ok thank you for that suggestion, right now they get laying pellett and chick starter mixed together. They love it! I don't really know where to find wheat seeds.

You can give them a spoon full of tuna or canned catfood each every other day, or some cat food kibble scattered about. I feed mine BOSS (black oil sunflower seed) and Calf Manna along with their regular food. I will also mix starter with some plain yogurt about twice a week.

Oh, and the old stand-by, scrambled eggs!

Mine got some extra protein today. Leftover lasagna, taco meat, minestrone and banana pudding. It was fridge cleaning day. We do this every three days. I'm a bit ocd about the fridge.
