Sorry I am jumping in late again regarding your run in with coryza.

You were lucky she told you that the chickens were infected but what if she didn't or did not know?

Its so easy to bring something home that will infect your birds from visiting someone.

Routinely practicing sound biosecurity is important. It's a bit like safe sex.

You sleep with everyone they slept with.

I seeded my father in laws flock but now won't even go and see his birds. I tell him to show me pictures.

Coryza is endemic in the Phil's. I vaccinate at 8 and 11 weeks. The vaccine is 500 doses but it keeps.

Recently I got hit by an illness that killed 50% of a grow out pen with 16-20 week birds overnight and another 25% over the next three days. All in 60 birds that were essentially presold at $50 each. They had no symptoms except torsioned neck.

We think it was some strain of Newcastle disease. That pen was missed in vaccination rounds with a change in staff. A tough lesson.

Hey, Oz! I have a question regarding incubation. Since you're in a humid climate do you dry incubate or are you monitoring humidity? I know you do vast numbers of eggs at a crack, but working with the humidity here (rather high lately due to our monsoon season....which is nice because the water gullies stay nice and full and I only have to fill two whereas when I was in the arid Las Vegas desert it was a constant monitoring) got me wondering what happens in a naturally very humid climate.

I have been following him from almost day one... I know he had to set up some dehumidifiers in order for his quail to hatch.... Some really big ones... Humidifiers that is. I Do Not know the particulars.

Wow! Major hassle with that episode of house-hunting. At least you were forewarned if not forearmed. But, still, kind of like going to a party and coming home with the flu.... Not what you expected nor wanted as an end result.

Spent today framing the coop.... Until I ran out of lumber thanks to lots of windows which require more wood for secure framing. I've probably overthought the coop, but I want it to be sturdy and secure.

I know your question was addressed to Oz, but he addressed this issue on this thread a few months ago. He built a really tight room to hatch in and runs a de-humidifier in it to get the humidity down. I remember he was plum tickled at the improvement in his hatch percentages.

The trick to making your own is to use either raw milk or plain yogurt. You might be able to use one of the light pasteurized whole milk products if you can find it.

The heat kills the culture of yeast needed to make sourdough.

Sorry to not respond earlier. All you have to do is send the friends of Carl a self addressed stamped envelope with the correct postage and they will send the starter as a dry powder to you.

It is very easy to do and great tribute to Carl.
