The Old Folks Home

Offhand, I'd guess it's about double what the other neighbors pay.

Alaskan, what kind of square footage are you keeping heated? And have you considered adding insulation? I'm starting to understand the 55F rule you've got though...

kinda big actually.....and it is a 'moron' house. (kept getting more added on)

It started life as a dirt floor concrete bunker, then a log home kit that was found drifting in the ocean was put on top. Then a concrete floor was poured in, then one nice standard addition was put on (standard as in actual certified builders built it), then a second standard addition was added on.

It is pretty well built, and the log home kit was wrapped in insulation and then siding. Also, most of the bottom floor is partly underground. The result is even with no heat, it takes a long time for the thing to loose the heat that it does have.....nice that way.

Other similar sized houses run about the same electric bill.

I run one big deep freeze, and three refrigerators....... then a bunch of electric fun toys....... not to mention the perpetually running washer and drier......

Anyway....if I could just keep the doors closed, it might help my bill be lower, but since I can't keep the windows and doors all closed, I don't think any more insulation is going to help me.

Then there is the dog (I do NOT like dogs), he scratches out all of the insulation that is around the door......

But anyway, I am sure the three fridges, one deep freeze, and the washer and drier suck up a great deal of that money.

In the winter, if it gets really cold, we need to keep the three diesels plugged in all night, and then the water bowls thawed. At least we are no longer running electric fence.

this is very interesting.... I was under the assumption you guys were on the same Latitude.... Is it the ocean temperature difference... Or am I just geographically wrong....

Yep, about same Latitude, I am at 59...I think he said he was at 58??????

He is warmer though, which I find ODD! He said he gets warm water....but how does it get all the way around Sweden and up to him? I thought the Baltic was super cold. Dunno, never swam in it.....

I get warm water from Japan....toasty in many ways

but I am colder than he is...... I am also pretty high up, at about 1,250 feet....what elevation is he at?

For some reason the EU regulation of not selling incandescent bulbs here was implemented pretty quickly. In a country where most people heat their houses 9-10 months per year, I don't think it really is doing any good. And as an added extra, we get to deal with the mercury in the more energy efficient lamps. I like incandescent bulbs, you can't beat the light they give. Halogens are okay too. Both of these produce a lot of heat, but since I'm heating with electricity anyway, I don't see a problem with that. We've got about a foot and a half of insulation in the walls, some rockwool, some polyurethane, some aluminium foil. The roof has over 2 feet of insulation. Our ventilation system also has a heat capturing system. So the house gets an A rating in energy consumption, that's not too bad. Our biggest thief I would say is the separate sauna partition which only has electrically heated floors, I've finally convinced Karin that we really don't need to keep it that warm all the time. It's okay if it's only 5-10 degrees C in there, when you want to go to the sauna you can switch the floor heating on and the sauna itself will warm it up a bit too, although it does take longer to heat it.

There was a huge debate on this before they look them off the market. People are still outrages. I bought 48 40watt bulbs before they sold out but I missed all the bigger. I got them on Amazon and when I tried to buy another box of 24 the price was tripled.
