The Old Folks Home

60 here. I live about a kilometer from the sea, so I'm not that much above it. The ground here is a bit elevated, so maybe 15 meters above?

The Gulf stream keeps our climate a bit warmer, it doesn't affect us as much as it does Norway or the UK, but still a bit.

And our house is better insulated, I think. And we've got heat reflecting triple glazed windows.

Is it for ventilation you open the windows? A central ventilation system would be more efficient, plus you could capture heat.

the windows and doors are open because I have children. I have five children.

Sometimes they want to go outside to pee.....and go out the window. Or, it is night time and the house got up to 58 which they think is too hot, so they open a window, or they see an eagle by the chicken coop, so they run out the house.....through a window.

They forget to close the windows. They also forget to close doors.

I have one child that likes the house warm, so he does try to close the open doors and windows......the rest of them are very happy to run around barefoot in the snow.....so have problems remembering to close windows and doors.

And yep, my insulation is NOT that good, and my windows are only double, not triple.

I am pretty thrilled with my current house though. When I first moved up here, we lived in an 'Alaskan' house. It had a single pane window in the bedroom, now THAT was cold. It was an original homestead house that had not been well upgraded. The wind went through it, not around it.

The house I am in now is also an orginal homestead house, but the second owners worked very hard to make it well insulated and mostly to code.

Most homes here are no where near cod

When I added on to this house, the builders brought up putting in a heat exchange thingy. I looked at them like they were crazy.

I pointed out how the addition, though well built, was attached with large openings, both upstairs and down, with the oldest part of the house, and that created plenty of air flow.

They did put the bathroom fans on timers, so that the air would pull through.

Sounds like you have your hands full.... I only have one kid walking ( baby will walk soon yikes) the big guy leaves doors and windows open... Takes off through them. Yup the house is cold today, he opened windows and i didn't notice soon enough, oh well I'll use more blankets. :)
Man it sounds like I don't watch him... He's fast! turn your back and he's dancing on the counter or out the door and off he goes running... :/

We cut down 4 coconut trees for lumber today. They are milled on site by a guy with a good eye, a steady hand and a long barred chainsaw. We will get about 700 board feet (equivalent to 85 2x4x10).

The best part is we get 4 "ubod" - the heart of the palm tree to eat. It's julienned down into 3" strips, cooked with cabbage, carrots, Chinese long beans and ground pork to make the filling for lumpia - Filipino egg rolls.

We will have enough for 3 or 4 gazillion I think lol

I had just got done starting my dish when Oz posted about Lumpia... its was almost 11:30 when I got finished popping a frozen chicken in the crockpot... one big fat onion cut into big chunks two whole lemons sliced on the bottom.

then I laid the frozen seasoned chicken on the veggies... Yeh I know the seasonings just bouced off. which were salt pepper garlic and poultry.... and a couple of bay leaves layed on top.

and NO I didnt get the giblets or neck out.... Normally I would put some uncooked rice in the bottom but I am out. So tomorrow I may go to our favorite Chinese take out for an order of cooked rice.... its about two cups. Rice is about the only thing I cant cook.

So frozen bird crockpot on low.... which is ten hours.... It should be done by 9 am... or thereabouts.

Lunch Dinner and maybe Pot pie... if i get ambitious.

nite everyone...

The noodles are pancit. There are several varieties. The thin glass noodles are bihun.

Fresh lumpia (not fried) are excellent with the ubod inside. Loads of garlic though. Lorenzo's nanny is famous for them. People used to fly her to manila to make them for a fiesta. She will be here at the beach house over the weekend :)

yeppers.... when our eldest was little, we lost him twice. After the second time, we put hooks and eyes on the top of the exterior doors. Silly tyke could open the rest of the locks.

Had some neighbors with the same problem with their eldest. They were lucky though. Their son would wander around and then come HOME. Once, one of the other neighbors tried to teach the kid a lesson, so he would stop wandering. The guy hid behind the bushes, and when the kid was walking past, he jumped out and yelled boo. Scared the kid silly, but he STILL kept walking off.

Dunno...none of the rest of my kids did that.

For both my eldest, and the neighbor's eldest, the kids were 2 to 3.
