The Old Folks Home

Canada doesn't use the Bovine growth hormone in beef production, but we might use others. Also no hormones in dairy production.

How much does that bedding cost you vehve? Or I should say how much will it cost you?

Think I'm going to do fermented feed as a primary food, and the dry stuff in one of those button dispensers for some entertainment this winter. There's a person on here trying fermented veggies for her birds also sounds interesting. And another person freezing dandelions to feed out through the winter...

Lots of people dry the fireweed for winter chicken feed. You have fireweed, right?

BTW  I've had 3 "Guaranteed to keep you dry- for extreme wet weather   " Gore-Tex rain parkas and all three  leaked at the shoulders.(bought from Lands end.  They also were supposed to be breathable but, not even close.  Got a similar product from LLBean and it felt like I was wearing a plastic tablecloth - had pit zips and everything but, ended up wetter (perspiration) on the inside, and very crackly noisy

I usually just tough it out since I am pre-shrunk anyway.

I use a boiled wool jacket, and a good wool hat. Lots of the water rolls off, the water that soaks in doesn't make you cold because of the wool, and it breathes.

The smartest thing to do with gore though is to just buy outer shells - nothing with lining. That way you can dress underneath according to how much you need. A good set of moisture transferring underwear against your skin, and depending on how much you need, you layer up with fleece and wool clothing. I do have a nice waterproof Fjällräven parka for really cold weather though. Together with a down vest I can stand around in -30 and still feel toasty warm.

The girls are saying "What! you told us we could....."

Just chicken sh't and this summer, a bit of water through the drought we had. I did spread crushed egg shell in the spring, and some more grass seed. Plus those planter boxes were filled with unused black soil, packed with nutrients. Some of the nutrients probably seeped into the ground. Also, I think the landscaping of that spot has been done only a few years ago, they've filled it with soil and planted the grass freshly then so it's still quite rich in nutrients to begin with.
