Kathy, there are some pretty nice restaurants in Helsinki that focus on local food, or at least very local ingredients. A couple even have a Michelin star. And Helsinki has pretty restaurants, but many of them can be quite disappointing. It's also hard for a tourist to know which are chain restaurants, and which are independent. What did you do on your stay?

Was there in the spring of 1991, I think, but was on a limited budget and hadn't really started to enjoy food the way I do today, lol. While there we I was sick, so I didn't get to do too much

, but the guys played Hockey with one of your local amateur teams.

Phone interview was good. No money but I'm not nuts!

Mustamakkara is actually pretty tasty. Local delicacy of Tampere. Lipeäkala, (or lutfisk in Swedish) is just as horrible as the Norwegian lutefisk. Then there's mämmi, which is a easter time desert, worth a try. And yes, we have pretty nice wild berries. And the Christmas dishes are pretty good too. Ham, and root fruit casseroles (rutabaga, carrot and potato mainly) are things found on almost every Finns Christmas table. Some also eat macaroni casserole or liver casserole at that time, but they're not on our menu. And roe is a favorite as well. And rosolli, sort of a salad made with cooked and cubed carrot, apple and beetroot, served with pink whipped cream. You can also add some herring to it, making it a sillisalaatti.

well, we were talking about what it would be like pre-new world goodies. So...you getta keep your carrot, but the potato is gone (I have no idea where rutabaga came from

)

And, WOW, I have been pleasantly and happily deprived of 'LIVER CASSEROLE!!!!

Didn't even know there was such a thing.

I like roe, but I think I would just stick with your roasted meats.
