The Old Folks Home

Ron, yeah, I'm going to try after day 10 again, maybe I'll see something. I had trouble with our previous batch of Marans eggs, but these are even darker than they were. I just hope they don't explode in the nest. Anyway, if the dark seems to grow, at least something is happening, right? I haven't had a rotten egg yet, so I don't know how that would look.
Rotten eggs and eggs that do not develop will glow when you candle them.

They also smell bad.

Be careful with them--commercial chickens can bring in bad stuff because of the vaccinations they get. Quarantine them and add a couple of sacrifice chickens in with them to see if your flock can take the germs they carry.

I hope they work out!
I like to quarantine a week or 2 and then stick a sacrificial bird with them another week or two if the first spell goes well.

These dark eggs are just a bit frustrating compared to the lighter ones, it was cool when you could see the heart beating in those.
I find eggs from birds with blue shell genes are some of the hardest to candle.
Maybe it's just me.

Vehve, if your nose is as sharp as mine is, you can smell a rotten egg long before it gets to the explosive stage.

It will hit you when you open the incubator.

Bunny, I'll have to order Karin to sniff them daily then, she's the bloodhound of our household.

*Edit* (cue Wisher)

My wife as well. She's constantly complaining of smells I don't detect. I think it's her imagination.
Last week she smelled something on the back porch and asked if I had chickens in the cellar again. I said, "no and how could a smell get from the cellar through a 20" stone foundation into the back porch without going through the first floor?"

Oh, Alaskan, I feel your pain.

I'm not going to mix at all. I don't have a run set up, just two good sized coops. They get about 15 sq ft. each. I do have 2 little 2.5 mo old roosters that I'm going to add to see if they get along. These are the one's that were SUPPOSED to be white rocks. Then he said he made a mistake and sent Barred Rocks. They are black with a little brown dusting on their hackles and dark feet. So mutts. They look to be very healthy and the house they were in was very clean and not too smelly. I'm going to bake Marta some Artisan bread so she will notify me next time.
