The Old Folks Home

Diva, are those the flowers with the velvetlike petals? I think my grandmother used to have those. If yours are by a window, could you have the light turned off in the middle of the day when sunlight is as intensive as possible?

Just a tropical depression at the moment - it will pass over our place while I am in the air tomorrow.

There is a bih mountain range between us and that little red dot.

The winds wont be much more than 40mph but it will sure dump some rain

Trade you.

  • ... WINTER STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 10 AM THIS MORNING TO 7 AM EST THURSDAY...
  • * HAZARD TYPES... HEAVY SNOW.
  • * ACCUMULATIONS... 8 TO 12 INCHES OF SNOW.

That's just what I needed on top of cooking. Shoveling, blowing and plowing.

You may be thinking of Gloxinias. They are also in that family, but are more popular as a florist plant.

Diva, many years ago, I succumbed to an impulse and bought some African Violet and Streptocarpus seeds from a commercial seed company. That was a fun little adventure - I wound up with a bunch of different colors. They don't carry the seeds for them any more, or I might be tempted to do it again.

VIVA . They have long straplike leaves which feel like there are sharp crystals buried in there. They are too large(wide) for the narrow window sills we have. Google streptocarpus and you'll see. Some growers are trying for horizontal growth - to give them a violet shape but, they are mostly upright plants. I have lots of variegated ones - most people think they are too difficult. I grow them right along with the solid green ones and they are treated just the same - which means neglected pretty much.

Come to think of it - Streptocarpus Candidus var.Wahroonga does have velvety leaves - a natural mutation that has both variegation and scented flowers but, hardly ever blooms & is very stingey with pollen. I've gotten several nice hybrids from a friend in Sweden over the years. She was able to grow and bloom them off her window sills. She used to sell some of mine on ebay. But I haven't heard from her in months. Her mom passed away and she said something about getting rid of most of her plants.

Geez I haven't been to bed at all and I'm supposed to be up for the bus in an hour or so. I'll be trying to shop while having the blind staggers I guess. People probably won't even notice, since I'm usually like that.

I'm feeling like Oz in the Philippines here, my ISP is having major problems, and the only way to connect to most sites is through a proxy server. Very slow, and images aren't loading. Both mobile and broadband connections are down...

Peep_show
People as individuals seem rational and sane but groups just get crazy... And I don't understand why, maybe mob mentality isn't something that is easily grasped by the coherent mind. It's a better reason to riot than a sports event though, if there such a thing as a better reason to riot... I'm still rather appalled that there was rioting in Vancouver over the Canucks losing the Stanley Cup... Pathetic...
Yeah, we don't have a corner on the crazy market. There are those insane sports riots all over. Futbol and football.

Our team lost, let's riot.
Our team won, let's riot.

Bama,
I think the aftermath of someone looting you would keep you well occupied. That buckshot cannon can create a pretty good mess to have to clean up.
At least no one was killed, actually no serious injuries. Amazing with all the shooting that went on.

LEDs are coming along. I really dislike the CFLs though. Flourescent light is hard on the eyes. But it does help plants grow!

Where did you get your LEDs?
Every time I go to Lowe's I walk around looking for the yellow discount tags. The last couple LEDs I bought were half off. They often heavily discount tools, hardware and plants. Once I bought 2 full racks of mums that were just finishing blooming. They were marked down to $0.50 each. I talked to the manager and bought all 60 of them for $5.
They also put out pallets of split/warped lumber. They list everything on a sheet so you know what's there and discount it 50%. If it spends more than a month outside, you can just make an offer. I wouldn't do cabinetry or build a house with it but it's perfect for chicken coops.
Sorry for the joke, rioting is no joke. It's a loaded subject... Hard to say what I think I don't know enough about it in this case...

There's senseless violent rioting and then there's revolutionary rioting... I'm terrible with words I'd love to explain what I want to without sounding like a moron but it's not going to happen...
It's a little harder to make your point with the written word. I guess that's what smileys are for. I try not to use them.

Rioting is no joke. But a little humor to get you through the tough times is certainly better than the rioting.
Always look on the bright side of life. Life of Brian

and once I switched them out, no big plants anymore. Now I know why.

When you posted the video the other day, I meant to ask if many typhoons come your way.

Please do not associate me with that blabbering dangerous idiot

but thanks for the spirit of the reply
I thought that sounded familiar when I heard Dr. Oz before.

I put that fool in the same box as that idiot who said vaccines cause autism - he lost his medical license.

Dr Oz has sold out to ratings and sensationalism. As a cardica surgeon, he should practice evidence based medicine but ignores the evidence. Its such a shame - he could have done so much good.

He belongs on Fox News

Just the facts ma'am, just the facts.

X's 2!!!

CNN and Fox News isn't helping! Totally opposite on how they are reporting and on which side they are on. CNN is putting all the blame on the cop and Fox News is putting the blame on the kid.
What happened to impartiality in the news?
Where's Walter Cronkite, Edward R. Murrow and John Cameron Swayze when you need them?

You stand on those slightly wider black areas. This thing is really meant to just be kicked forward on snow or ice, but it works with dogs pulling too. Around here, a lot of elderly people use these in the winter instead of rollators, but you can also get up to about 25mph on even ground if you're in good (great) shape.
Slightly, being the operative word.

AJ, 30-36 weeks sounds very late, are wyandottes that slow to mature?
I've only had a few but they hatched the same date as 16 other breeds in the flock I had and they were the last to lay. They hatched in October so they hit POL in spring so they weren't delayed so much. I think the Wyandottes started about 28 weeks.
