The Old Folks Home

It has been very wet here--some places had more the 6 inches of rain in 24 hours!

The Russian River will flood at Gurneyville today.

One lane of the freeway was closed due to flooding this morning--I had to Que up with other drivers and drive slowly past it. It is always weird to me--Sun was out yet the floods were happening.

Hopefully we will dry out in time for the next one!

Ron, does it escape all the way to the sea/evaporate, or does some make it into underground reserves as well?
A large amount of water goes into lakes here. We have a lot of State and Federal Gov. requirement for water flow and wetlands use though.

Lake Mendocino is part of the Russian River Storage system. It is still at historic lows but It will be going up quickly now.

We have a new Bond measure to build more water storage and a tunnel to move water down south. The new dams will not be able to store that much more water though.

Money should be spend fixing 100 year old pipes in the big citeis though. Los Angeles loses as much water each year to "shrinkage"(broken pipes and leaks) as it uses. San Francisco had a huge sink hole last week from a broke pipe..near the site of a sink hole for the same reason last year.

We are having a Storm in California--It is just a storm. It was being called the storm of the Century...then the storm of the decade...now it is the worst storm in 5 years. We have not had any storms in three years do big Whup!

The rain is nice but it is not hurricane force event here today.

Is that a new type of Yellow Journalism? Stores have been picked clean already and I do not see a reason for it so far.

I wondered how you were doing. It sounded like Marin County had all kinds of flooding. I know that are some hills between you and Marin County.

I think it is Yellow Journalism of a sort. The Yellow Press was Hearst and competing newspapers competing for circulation. The sensationalism today is the same thing even political exaggeration is to gain more support.

We are fine in the Valley. If the wind had been as strong as predicted, we would have been in trouble--downed trees and etc.

The lakes are filling up!

More rain will help too...just not today....

We had rain and some wind up to Wednesday. Thursday was dry but VERY windy. You should be getting that today. Friday, today, is OK. no real rain or wind so far.

As some of you may know, I keep my teeth firmly on my tongue when it comes to the media's coverage of law enforcement.  I know that bitterness is destructive to my ideals.  It has become increasingly difficult for me to do so, and at times, I slip.  This topic is deeply embedded in my heart and I seethe when people, mostly in the media, ramble on about things they know nothing about, intentionally inciting others (who also have no personal knowledge) to anger over perceived injustices.  I know my job is sometimes ugly.  Hard decisions have to be made in a split second, and then they are second guessed, with clear hindsight, ad nauseum.

I will retire soon, not because I am fed up with the job, but because I feel that if I am willing to risk my life when you are attacked physically, I should be able to expect the same when my attack happens in the media.

Today, I found a post on FB that does a pretty good job of voicing how I, and countless other good men and women in my profession, are beginning to feel.  Who will do our jobs when we decide it will not be worth it tomorrow?

It's a Tuff job that needs to be done.

Deb most of my hiking pictures are from trails in the Salt Lake City area. I agree with you it is very pretty country if they could just do something about the winters

Of course you have to have snow if you are going to claim best snow on Earth

I have to admit though, this winter has been wonderfully mild so far. Temps above average and the biggest amount of snow we have had on the valley floor was an inch or so. I know the ski resorts are not enjoying it but I am. No shoveling and no "skating" into work as we go over the mountain pass. Not bad at all.

Hasn't this been strange weather? It's supposed to rain..today and tomorrow..been blowing hard enough out there that something must be coming.
I am also enjoying the mild weather so far. I wouldn't even be disappointed if we didn't get snow for Christmas. I just worry now about Jan. and Feb. Are they going to make up for what hasn't happened yet? :/ Don't mind the snow, just don't like those really low single digit numbers!
