The Old Folks Home

Another benefit of buying the tuna, I made a new Vietnamese friend, Thi Nguyen, who runs that particular stand. We talked about everything I know of Viet Nam from my VN friends and my daughter's trip. He came to the US as an adolescent and has been working seafood since high school.
While we talked, near the end of the market day, he gave me 3 beers.

At first, since they are all pullets from late May of this year, I thought maybe they were "whoops!" eggs that came as a surprise as a first or 2nd egg.  But it's been happening on a more or less consistent basis, so I don't think that's the case for most of them... I'm ordering some ceramic eggs to put in there.  As to the foam... I'm sure it isn't actual foam, but I saw a picture somewhere of what looked like a foam mat in the bottom of a nest box. The person who posted the pic said it was slip resistant and easy to clean with none of the mess associated with straw or other types of bedding commonly used. Can't remember where I saw it though.

I grabbed one of the rubber runners I use in dog crates and put that on the bottom of one, then covered with a low layer of shavings. The second one is just shavings but much thicker. The mat on the bottom really helps, all but one prefer it. I think the odd one out just likes the deep shavings because she loves rolling around in them and she gets the whole space to herself (48x30 dogcrate).
