Most i have done is refrigerator pickles..... No canning involved..... And took a water bath canning class for pickles.... That was a good one.

There are several people on BYC that i have met in the San Diego area... Who teach canning, Chicken processing, and preservation... Soap and chees making too. Usually there is a small materials fee... I came home with a jar of pickles and a handout for waterbath canning. For ten bucks I got to meet alot of people like me and get good instructions to boot.

I also have a friend who is a canning person but she uses one of those pressure canners that doesnt have a dial on it.... I guess its ok but its set for a specific pressure .... All the canning books I have looked at show ones that have a dial on the top....

The instructions on it says it can double as a water bath canner. I dunno this one is 69 bucks.

The ones I have seen that I like are the All American Canner

The one above is a small one but I really like the construction.... Because I know what pressure failure can do....

That one looks like it locks down tight. I use my cooker for water bath as well...just make sure I don't turn lid to locked position. That's awesome there are classes so close to you, self taught here.

Afternoon everyone!!!
I would love to have ducks but our summers are so short and we have no ponds etc. close to the house. I just don't know if I could give them proper care.

The temps are really beginning to drop now and with the wind, it's not so funny anymore. We are blessed to be totally prepared but I worry about some of the critters. Not ours, they're better situated then some people, but some folks up here just don't get it that there's cold and then there's dangerous cold, even for their animals.

I've had a pot of chicken soup simmering on the stove all day. I used the stock I had made earlier in the week from the turkey carcass saved from Christmas. We had a big bowl with the barley I cooked on the side with some of soup broth, puppy got a plate full of scraps left when I took the thigh meat off the bone to add back to the soup and DH took a warm plate of the extra barley I cooked for the girls out to them (he said he got attacked when he went into the coop with that

hehehe). Now everyone is all snuggled in watching the play-offs. Well, actually I just looked over at the couch and I didn't see any eyes open so I think pa and puppy are probably counting sheep. My legs are complaining a bit after all the walking yesterday so now I'm curled up in my recliner just looking around and counting my blessings.

My personal outside attire in this weather has me looking more like a stand-in for the Pillsbury Dough Boy!

It's been a long couple of weeks. Between holidays and a funeral I'm pretty wiped out. Finally mostly caught up reading BYC.

A lot of good food discussion and a couple of interesting ones. Love the Apple Pancake recipe! Making chili for tonight. Not so crazy about guinea pig. My girls dad used to hunt squirrel. I cooked it all the time. Only ate it once.

I too use a big roaster to make Prime rib in. It's great because it frees the oven up for things like pie and rolls and vegetable dishes. I have four crock pot sizes 1 cup, 1 quart, 4 quart and 6 quart. I like the ones with removable pots so easy to clean.

Bunny and deb so glad your horses are ok!

Oz so sorry about your storm and that poor family. Glad they found the children's bodies.

We too will be getting the frigid temps and snow. Yesterday we had ice. I know beacuase I fell on it and hit my head. first on the bumber of SIL vehicle then on the ground. Insult to injury! I have a nice knot on the back of my head and a banged up elbow to with it! Just call me grace.

Supposed to paint GD's bedroom tomorrow and Tuesday but that will be postponed between the weather and my gracefulness just not up to it this week.

If I could have ducks, I would love to have the WH...hatched some, but didn't dare keep them in my small area.
