The Old Folks Home

I saw that..... how many chickens will it feed? I was concerned that they would all want to eat at the same time and only the alphas would be able to get in there.

I had that same worry.... I think that if I had 2, I would feel comfortable with it.

However, I haven't managed to make a second one, so I put in a second feeder that is a very long trough feeder. It is way too easy, if there is any restriction on feed in the freezing cold, for them all to die.

this one holds 2.5 ish bags of feed.

Good morning....

playing catchup.

In high UV areas plastic anything disintigrates.

This is what i use for water made of recycled materials and semi soft sided

the pan above is what I use for water. Can't get better than that. Almost indestructible.

I wonder if a gravity feeder would work for FF. Basically the kind that Sam has, but with a airtight lid and fittings. Then it would always keep the FF at the same level in the feed port. Might be a bit difficult to fill though, and maybe it's a bit too thick to work like that.

One of the problems with an airtight lid is the gases that the bacteria produces... As it expands it forces the feed out of the feeder faster (sometimes) than the birds can eat it. A couple holes in the lid helps or leaving the lid cracked a little...

Yup... My biggest problem with the expansion is the loss of moisture in the feed. Of course before the feed starts to overflow the liquid that settles to the bottom overflows. This causes the feed to dry a bit and the consistency becomes one that does not flow easily... The only thing I can come up with is a little bit ridiculous in it's complexity... Anyway the idea would be to have a small tube that was pretty much at the very bottom, it would drain into the top of the bucket, I don't know if that makes sense or not... Pretty sure it won't work anyhow...
