The Old Folks Home

Bunny, maybe just a little bit...

Wisher, freezing temps in areas that don't usually see them can be quite nasty. Driving is probably one of the worst things, if you don't have winter tires and you're not used to driving on slippery surfaces, it can end pretty badly. Snow can be another issue, and of course pipes bursting and other issues that come with water freezing.

I'll be schlepping water out to my animals several times today, too. Major brrrrrrs!

Something else that people don't think about is power outages. A lot of homes in the South use electricity for heat, which can really put pressure on the power grid when the thermometer dips. There are about 7000 people in Wilmington that had a very, very cold night last night!

I watched the local news for the weather report last night. They keep saying it's turning colder, gearing up for the Arctic blast coming in on Sunday, when the temperatures are going to plunge. This is a current screenshot of the 10 day weather forecast, which is what they were showing on the weather forecast too. While the weatherman was talking about the temps dropping over the weekend, because they are going to plunge on Sunday, I'm looking at this on the screen behind him. I seem to live in the state of confusion, and I'm not alone. LOL!

Diva, of course I did. Don't you know I control all your thoughts? Right now you are thinking of ice cream.

Ah, local news; one of the few places left where hoof-in-mouth disease still flourishes, and at unguarded moments, the guinea pigs run rampant in the control room . . .

Personally, I've been living in the state of Near Panic; probably moving to Total Exhaustion before long.

FINALLY! Whew! OK, here is my grandmother, born 1913, on the home place in the Hill Country of Texas, surrounded by a flock of turkeys. I have no idea what kind.

Either way, I will close in the front side of my coop today. I can take it back down on Monday, if needed. Of course, I found two young rats in the coop yesterday. I already suspected, because I saw a few droppings near the water bucket. For the most part, I have them under control now, and only see one or two when the weather gets really cold, or there is another phase of major construction across the street. I need to go buy more baits. They are actually working far better than I expected.

I have a trio to bathe, and groom today. I was expecting my daughter to help, but she's working, so I'll go it alone. Dh will help hold them for me to trim their toenails later this evening when he wakes up, I use a dremel, so it's fairly quick, and easy.

I have them all on layer feed now, and to increase the protein, I treat them with Calf-Manna. Calf-Manna is a great product, however, it has given me two scares, since it's a very deep pink, sort of maroon type color. The day after the first time I fed it to them, I noticed the poop boards had this reddish pooh on it. My mind was racing with all the things that could have caused them to have a sort of bloody looking stool overnight. It finally dawned on me that it was the coloring in the Calf-Manna. I felt so dumb! I had noticed a few times that the chickens' feet were looking a little raw in places, but their scales weren't lifted up any, so it didn't exactly look like scaly mite. I put my glasses on, picked up one of the cockerels to examine more closely. The raw place brushed right off. Bits of the Calf-Manna were on their feet. Silly me.
