The Old Folks Home

In 2014, The Earth broke NOAA hottest teperature records set in 2010 and 2005. The last time the Earth set an annual NOAA cold record was in 1911.

just sayin....
I'm with you. Just saw that on the news. Surprise, surprise, surprise!!!!

...

Those are SO SUPER pretty? Are they your Pendescacolas? (sp?)

I would love some eggs that dark.
They aren't always that dark. The birds usually lay very dark eggs but they vary over the season. Even when they aren't extremely dark, one end will usually be.
Some varieties of Penes are supposed to lay darker eggs but because I eat chicken, I opted to raise the black variety - the only DP variety.
Turns out they're one of the most famous breeds in Europe for the flavor of the meat. So much so that they have their own festival. Fira del Gall (Fair of the Rooster). The rooster is the Black Penedesenca.
Penedes is a state in the region of Catalonia, Spain.
Empordanesas, a similar breed are from Emporda, another part of Catalonia. Empordanesas also lay very dark eggs.
They're the only two breeds in the world with white earlobes and lay brown eggs.
They're also the only breeds with carnation or king's combs.
Besides Spain there are Penedesencas in Ireland, Germany, the US, Canada, Argentina and supposedly some in Central America but I haven't found where they are there.
They were almost extinct but a joint university and government program rescued them in the 1980s.
There's more interesting history here.

Some of my birds are on the black page in the above link.

They are very predator proof during the day. Extremely alert, skittish and fast. If no danger threatens they're content to stay inside 3 foot fences. I usually keep a flock of cockerels inside a 2 ft. fence. Makes fencing less expensive. If pressured from a ground predator though they can fly straight up onto the tops of buildings. They just prefer to run than fly.

lol. Sup bro...good to be back. If my bigger half takes down the Christmas tree, I will do some of those honey-do things in her notebook....I like the guns and roses song. Confused tho
Wife took down the tree last Sunday. Actually she unwrapped the lights and put all the decorations away.

why dontcha take it down?
Actually I carried the tree out afterward.

The Pope is in the Philippines.

Today he flew in to the area hit by typhoon yolanda but had to evacuate at 1pm because of tropical storm Amang is about to hit with 70 mph wind gusts.

Why do i find a small amount of irony with this?
The Pope came in like a whirlwind, eh?
I just saw on CNN that this is the dry season in the Northern part so an odd time for a typhoon.

The coop fairy is from Seattle but claims to be Canadian because she was conceived there.

It's currently negative 11 without the wind chill. Mom refused to go out this morning and do the farm chores.

Oh, well. I'm going to take her out soon to walk this:

It's 7/8 of a mile out to the lighthouse. The wind is whipping, plus the waves will be crashing and splashing.

And once you get out, thou shalt walk back. There is no other way back out.

Was going to have pulled venison for dinner tonight, but the darned deer didn't cooperate and was frozen solid this morning, even though we took it out of the freezer Wednesday. So instead I've got Ron's pizza dough in bags on the counter. The deer has 24 more hours to comply with thawing before I take matters into my own hands (or microwave).

I really appreciate all the shared recipes.

I candled the eggs again last night, first lockdown will be tomorrow. We're at 67% development in the LG and 68% in the Brinsea. I think I've done a pretty good job in the LG although it requires significantly more amount of hovering/adjusting. I've got the second free LG up and almost steady, nearing 99. The second batch of eggs is only 3 days behind so I'll be using both LG's to hatch.

SCG, have fun at the lighthouse. I think that if you slowcook the venison anyway, you could dump it in a pot even if it's a bit chilly on the inside. If you leave it out on the counter for a couple of hours it should be fine. But pizza does sound delicious too.

I did my chookie chores all by myself this morning!!!!!!!! FINALLY! (well, with my sweet DH peeking out the kitchen window watching me the whole time-such a helicopter mom

Wait, why am I so excited???? This means there is no reason anymore why I can't clean out the coop today

Sorry you are so chilly this morning Vehve. We are actually just a little below 0 C. here (for you non- centigrade folks we're about 28o F) which is like a heatwave for us. We haven't been this warm since late October!!! AND, we could actually get warm enough to do some ice removing later!!!
