A grunion sounds like a cross between a grub and an onion - weird combination. I KNOW I wouldn't want to eat one.

you dont like fish right? You wouldnt want to eat grunion....

My mom used to get smelt and cook em for dinner... of all the fish she cooked they were pretty good.

Grunion are about the same size I believe. But you have to catch them with your bare hands at night because thats when they come on land to lay their eggs. AND you have to catch them after they lay their eggs.

Funny thing is no one will tell you when they are going to run or when they are running.... During the new moon...

Once they start running though the word spreads like wild fire here.

Hands and a bucket and maybe a flashlight.

I've never heard of ice fishing for smelt. My father used to go up to Pulaski NY to catch smelt in the Salmon River in the spring, usually in the creeks that ran into the river. He used a dip net at night with a lantern and would come home with hundreds of them, five gallon pails full of them. The little fishes were 6-8 inches. Take the heads off, gut them, dust them with flour, toss them in the deep fryer. Eat them bones and all. They were delicious. I haven't heard of anyone going since the early '90s. Don't know if it just isn't as popular as it used to be, or if there just isn't that many anymore.

It's popular up here. You can also fish it in spring but there's something fun about ice fishing. The place I went has 80 camps from 2-10 people. There's another 8 or so smelt camp owners along that stretch of the river, too. There's also lake ice fishing, I may try that next.

Ok, I've been good. BUT!!! I can't help it!!! I've got to ask.
Had the " {back} side effects" worn off from Sunday dinner before you all stuffed into that little, very toasty, fish camp????

We only had one near deer disaster (isn't that why they call it a "smelt" shack?). I reupped tonight with another sandwich. Maybe people will leave me alone at work tomorrow.

I've got both batches of my eggs on lockdown in different LG styrobators. I can't believe 3 weeks has almost gone by. Can't wait to meet my new friends.

Hey, I might be game for that, my Welsummer is finally shooting out eggs quite regular. When is the kick off date? For some reason I think that was a dumb question, 21 days before right?

Yes!

But it will need to start a bit earlier--someone might set Emu eggs and they take 55 days I think.
