I you just use your PC for emails, web surfing and school work, the basic PC will be fine,

Yes!

One or our Professors finally switched to DSL from dial up two years ago. He had access to lots of broadband-he lives in Berkeley California. His computer would not update so he had to bring it to my office in Davis regularly for updates.

Life is much better for him now. Oh, and me too!

I have my little box for $600 for I think 9 months, for unlimited data, through AT&T.

It is super nice though, since I can carry it in a pocket, and then use my computer or tablet where it is that I am. Alaska actually has very good cell phone coverage for a tiny population... we do have some dead spots... but luckily not at my house.

Cell phone service here is much higher up here, I can't imagine getting unlimited cell phone data for only $50 a month like @tntchix says she gets... that would probably be $120 here. but

point is, ask around, you can probably get a cute little wifi box for your pocket like what I have, but way less expensive. I think all cell phone carriers now carry the little hotspot things, and I think also many internet providers.
