The Old Folks Home

Unless the modem is wired directly into the phone line, the very first thing I'd do is go to the dollar store, and get a new phone cord. Back in the day, that's how we all had to connect to the internet. The wires in a phone cord are very thin, and the plastic connectors wear over time. That's where I would start, and that may fix the problem. Next, if she has her installation cd, try this:

This might solve the problem. From experience, this does not always work, however, it's a good first step, since it sometimes will solve the problems.

After you try this, if it doesn't work, let me know, and we can go from there.

Snow was supposed to stop at 10, now extended to 1130.

The little chickie seems about the same this morning - still eating, drinking and grooming, and is much more stable on one leg now, without using its wings. I cleaned its hospital this morning, and while doing that stuck it in the corner of the brooder, blocking most of the way with the hospital that I was cleaning. Well, chickie took one look at the opportunity and literally hop-sprinted to the group. She didn't fare that well, though - got run over and knocked down before I could get her - but when I tried to scoop her up she took off, again. She's got spunk.

SCG sorry that you are still getting snow. We got some rain yesterday but it continues to be a mild winter here so far.

it stays that way.
Finished my latest project. The center part is what they call string quilting. I really like the effect and it has me thinking of other ways to use it since you can use scraps to make them.

@dsqard I remember watching an episode of a quilting show, and seeing someone using the string piecing technique to make a landscape quilt with mountains in it- in fact, that one pic you said you were going to make into a quilt put me in mind of it when I first saw it.

And you guys forgot - @Bunnylady for her knowledge of button-pushing.

I'm hoping that my win7 laptop lasts until win10 is out and has the worst kinks worked out. Not a fan of win 8.1 either, although the ms surface pro 3 is a pretty handy little thing.
My 2+ yr old Toshiba laptop (my workhorse) running win7, DH has the old HP desktop running Vista setup on the kitchen table to play his poker games and I have a brand new HP tower desktop that I bought a yr ago setup on my computer desk running win8.1 collecting dust. I say brand new because it honestly has less than 5 hrs on it. Why? Because I totally hate 8.1. I keep swearing I am going to make myself learn it and like it, nope. I love windows in general so much that I have all my machines running Chrome for my primary browser. (please don't tell my old boss because I was working in R&D many, many, many, many, many years ago and my name is still listed as an alpha tester on Windows 2.1-yes, there really were women in the field that long ago tho we were such a rare breed my boss/mentor -also a "she"-was listed in the Who's Who of Computer Science at the time) My kids all used to call me Grandma Geek!!!

Anyway, now I have the excuse to just let that machine sit til I download 10. Funny how they still even remember me, but I can still beta test the 10 if I want to. Guess they want to see if it has a functioning senior I/O ability (idiot operator

Chicki, I hope they scrap this metro UI stuff, it's horrid. I mean I can understand the idea, but the way they've implemented the thing, it's just bad to use. And all of 8 and 8.1 has so many flaws and missing functionality, and glitches and everything. I mean if I can find 10 things about it that work the wrong way immediately, shouldn't their Q&A department be able to do that already prior to release? But for a while it seems like every other win OS is sort of decent, so I'm hoping 10 will fulfill that trend.

And for what it's worth, women are often a lot better at designing UI:s. That's part of the reason the Nokia phones of the 2000's were so good and easy to use, the interface was in large part designed by women.

Really kinda funny how "lately/historically" Windows seems to alternate "good (relatively speaking) then "bad" update/releases... Not including the old prehistoric versions (pre1990), which I vaguely remember, Win 3.0 as I remember was very stable and pretty easy to use.

Then came Win 95, which had the first of many quantum leaps, which was a little less stable and a bit quirky.
roll.png
Then came Win98 which fixed most of the 95 issues and was once again a pretty decent OS. As I recall, I was pretty danged happy to move from 95 to 98

.

Of course as with everything, there MUST be improvements (a way to tap the users pocket books for more $$), so Win 98 was followed by Windows 2000 and ME, both of which had some rather major flaws/issues and I managed to avoid using either personally based on experiences, reviews and general consensus. Thankfully, Microsoft maintained updating Win98 through the period of Win2000/ME so I was able to keep using it until they finally released XP. I was very happy with XP and XP Pro and used it up until recently (March 2014?) when Microsoft stopped updating/supporting it. There was NO WAY I was going to change to Vista... that OS was (still is) a nightmare.

Several years ago I bought a copy of Windows 7 based on the general user consensus that it was a very stable and fast OS. I wanted to make sure I had a copy for the eventual new computer I would need/buy and when Win 8 came out, I knew I'd better get a copy of 7 before it became unavailable. Glad I did that! So I'm now operating Win 7 and overall I'm pretty happy with it. I do NOT like Win 8 at all! I dislike the fact that it's being crammed down our throats. Locally here, the major computer stores like http://www.microcenter.com/ is (or was) still offering systems with Win 7 installed and selling Win 7 OS software as an option to avoid Win 8. Many Ebay sellers also still offer Win7 as an OS on their systems.

Anyway, since Win10 is the next alternating "good" OS, I'm pretty interested to see if the trend continues. I haven't done any research on it, and won't until it's available/in use. Then I guess we'll all find out

Only time will tell.

From what I understand the reason for the # jump is that 10 is not a "fix" but a complete rebuild. They've basically raised the white flag on 8 and started over, again. My understanding is they will be dropping support for all prior versions (already done it on Vista) which is the reason, the grapevine has it, for planning on offering a free upgrade in the fall to all users now running Vista and newer tho I seriously doubt it will even run on a Vista machine. I do know they have put back some of the more user friendly features they took out of 8 (they listened to the screaming hordes) and I have already had the opportunity to play a little bit with the 3-D hologram ability. A little freaky but really cool to a granny geek like myself. (oops. forgot to mention that requires a Star Trek style headset of course)
