The Old Folks Home

I was thinking the same thing about the combs.

If you talk to Blackhorse again, have her give me a call. The old number doesn't work. I sent her a pair of Penes a couple years ago and was hoping to get some back before she moved. Maybe she can send me some eggs. I'm in dire need of some new blood after I lost all but one flock and rooster.

Yes, use them in place of a regular heat lamp. They still need a ceramic or other heat resistant socket.

That's 3 different roosters. I have 7 now and need to figure out which 4 I'm keeping I have a 4 week old cockerel and am planning on doing a lot of hatching so I'll be getting replacements.

I thought it was the same one at different times but now that I look closer, I see the comb points are different. I hate deciding on roos.

I want to keep them all until one ticks me off. We just have a hobby flock so no specific breeding requirements, just that they are nice to the girls and us. Currently we have 4 and they each have a different reason why they are still with us: Silver Phoenix - he may enter a breeding/show program, Cochin bantum - My son's favorite, Cochin Frizzle Bantum - he snuggles with my silkie girl on the ground and keeps her warm at night, Silkie roo - he doesn't get much mating done, but keeps the others off the girls and is just generally too cute to let go.

What can I say. I am a sucker for pretty birds.

The first one was a youngster, no spurs yet, the last pic was one of my first. I hate deciding too after it gets down to fine details. Any with a red hackle feather, white feather tips or light legs are the first to go. Then I pick the ones with the most white on the earlobes while making sure the comb is right. Shape is important but hasn't been an issue yet. From there, I try to keep the heaviest since they're DP. I've procrastinated on putting a data base together. I just need more focus and until I get some new blood in the flock, I have to keep close track of generations and progeny.
