The Old Folks Home

Dsgard that show cocker is beautiful(I used to breed them) but, that is the fancy schmanzy style snoods. IN the olden days when I showed dogs they had plain, knitted ones with
firm control that made their eyes squint.

I think SCG glued that bird's feet to the bottom of the bowl before pouring in the water... Only way I can figure she got the danged thing to stand still like that with its feet in water without being forceably held in place. They aren't smart enough to be standing still because they're staring down the barrel of a 12 gauge

SCG looks like you are marinating his feet.

That chicken is a her! And I guess I am technically marinating, but mostly softening and cleaning the feet up in preparation for bumble/scab removal and treatment.

Not at all!! The point was if you get the temperature to the correct (almost hot but not quite) zone the biddies enjoy it immensely and soak on their own without human oversight. They'll soak their feet and preen their feathers. And likely poop on your counter, so put down towels. You fill the water up first, then add biddy. I've done this with countless birds, although the leghorns were, for some reason, frequent fliers (pun intended) on the bumblefoot brigade.

What's even more freaky is hearing a hen crowing in the house. I had a Serama hen hatch some chicks during the winter a couple of years ago. The weather was so cold, I wound up keeping her and her brood in a large tote in my living room until the cheepers had some feathers. Mama displayed a talent I didn't know she had regularly - surprised the heck out of me the first time I heard it!

And just for the fun of it, a few snaps of the aftermath of yesterday's winter mess. Though there were a few power outages, for the most part, the freezing rain stopped before any real damage was done.

My world looks very different today:
