The Old Folks Home

A simple brooder design.

Its a modified ohio brooder.

install a 40 watt bulb in the closed in section with a hinged solid lid over it.

dimensions 36x24x15 with an 8" divider from the heated section to the non heated.

very nice! I used to do the same with cardboard boxes... but back then I had no heat lamp, I would just pin a heating pad to the outside wall on the closed box, and cover with a blanket to keep the warmth in.

I would also use a book room reading light, and put it low over the box to try to warm it up a bit more.

Interesting, with my total lack of any clue... the chicks, though they WOULD all smash up against the wall with the hot pad on it, none of them died. (except for the one year that the dog got into the baby chicks.... but that is a different thing all together)

Beer, great story about your great grand father, he must have been great fun.

And actually.... the 16year old boy now bathes .... WAY too much..... like EVERY DAY!

crazy teen hormones

the problem with brooder lights is that most of the heat warms your room, not the chicks.

this design is cheap to make and economical to run. At 10cents a kilowatt a 250w heat lamp costs 60 cents a day to run and 10 bucks to buy.

I run up to 8 heated brooders at any time and 30 watt light bulbs work for me. After 3 weeks they are moved to non heated brooders until they get their first coryza vaccine shot.

Thanks everyone for the ideas. I guess I will use a rod to hang it from. :) Ron I cannot get my frugal farmer husband to believe I need 150.00 worth of heat plates when he is griping about the 8.00 light bulb.

I would pay it but I don't think I will fit in the coop with the hens for a month. lol

Dude you put your foot in your mouth again and asked for that one.

Get him to build one of those brooder boxes that oz posted--a 30 or 40 watt bulb should work well for a setup like that and they do not cause as much of a fire danger.
