The Old Folks Home

I'm Felix from Finland. I like building stuff and composting. We have handful of chickens and are expecting a litter of bunnies.

Oz, what do you think of modifying for pesticide resistance so that you can pump even more round up on your crops? I think that's the most scary part.

my understanding is there are two common types of GMO crops.BT crops - those with the bacillus thiringiensis toxin transgenes.there was drama because bt was measured inn humans in a canadian study but BT is the worls most commonly used "natural" and "organic" pesticede used by organic farmers. Some resistance has occured. Argument could be made that billions upon billions of gallons of more harmful pesticides would have been used if BT crops were not available.

The products that are round-up ready are modified to provide resistance to the herbicide and thus decreasing the amount of tilling to eliminate weeds. As he farmer can spray once the crop has emerged , he saves money on labor fuel and wear and tear in field prep. the no till method also saved billions of tons of soil erosion.

I dont want more chemicals in our food @vehve I think it is scary. I also pause to wonder how many more chemicals we would have deveoped without them.

Ok, looking for some thoughts/ comments from you scientific types on here.

Rosemary is a good one for bees.... and so useful. How about an Herb garden front yard.

I absolutely love that.

I find it interesting that given the worldwide use of round-up tone would expect more evidence of cancer if it was a serious carcinogen.

The IARC process determines the potential for a compound to cause cancer, but not the likelihood and as such, cannot give

There may be concern for a farmworker that use the spray routinely and without adequate protection but in the quantities you and I would consume in our corn flakes

Cancer.org website has a list of all IARC type 2a carcinigens. They include shiftwork, and deep frying.

I am not trying to trivialize the risk, i am just putting some persective on it. The non-gmo fanatics are going to sure run with the report. In a week there are going to be new conspiracy theories and people putting roundup into the same evil bucket as formaldehyde, plutonium, mustard gas and benzine.
I appreciate what you are saying, what I see is more and more cancer everywhere. There are causes everywhere including "Roundup". My response is this; I believe it does belong in the same evil bucket as you call it.

round up is used for killing weeds... Leafy weeds.
Glyphosphate is actually injected into some of our seeds now, not just Bt corn. It's not just sprayed on our dandelions and crabgrass. It gets into the water supply from runoff. Miracle Gro is just as bad.

OK, I gotta back off now. I get waaaaay to passionate about this. I don't want to upset the thread and go to byc jail.

I eat every spare cockeral so no problem in our farm but its a potential way to address the issue.

The "breaking news" on the top of the page was medical MJ for pets

I survived by doing day care and sewing. My best friend was a teacher. Both of us were around lots of kids. As the years went by, we both saw a trend of more behavior problems. And health issues. Why? We could speculate - all the junk added to food, bad food choices, bad parenting?

I do have my opinions on round up and other crop manipulation. But I see round up bought in 300 pound containers, plus all of those tanks of whatever they dump on the fields.

Now I need to hush.
