The Old Folks Home

but with lice, you never have to feel alone, AND it is the gift that keeps on giving, some new ones hatch every day.

Think how awesome that must be, to get to be the incubator for perpetually hatching eggs!

It has felt like that here. I had 20 hatch on the 16th of April. 25 hatched on the 16th. 20 hatched over the 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th of May.
I set 48 eggs on the 30th so they'll hatch in 2 more weeks. I'll be setting more May 10th, 27th and June 6th for the Zodiac Hatch-A-Longs.

Well I got all my vendors paid for my May 11 shipment of hatching eggs.
Ladycats wheaten Marans, ChicKat's cream legbars (and hopefully isbars), Junibutt's cream legbars, CJWaldon's Isabel leghorns, and KYTinpusher's Isbars. Im fired up!
It was starting to get a little crowded here chick wise so I decided to post an ad on Craigslist.
Straight run day olds for $4, sexed pullets up to a month old for $8 and hatching eggs $2 ea..
Last night a lady drove up from southern Illinois to get a dozen eggs. She liked them so much she bought all 20 of the day olds and 11 two week old pullets.
Good thing I've hatched a lot, she really cleaned me out.

I've heard breeding a green to a white can give you blue layers? Isabels are white right, and if isbar is double blue gene I think it could be a possibility? I know nothing of chicken genetics.
Every time I think I'm understanding it, I find out how much I don't know.

Wondering if you made it to Zion...been raining every day here..probably there too..and..you have to be very careful for flooding out there! It's been coming down here..Hallelujah!
It has been an unusually dry spring here but we're supposed to get some storms today and chances of rain 6 of the next 7 days.
I better go out and plant something.

We have a piglet-fest

11piglet Monday and 16 today.

The final girl is due tomorrow.

If she can squeeze our 13 we will hit 40 little oinkers
That's great.

I didn't expect a whole lot of business since I'm the only one selling chicks and eggs for that much.

ETA
Good job on the opossum. I may have to try that with possums and coons.

Egg color come from shell color and a "coating". The genes for both are separate and brown and blue are dominant--it only takes one form either parent to be expressed in the offspring.

There are more than one gene for brown too.

It is possible that you would get some blue egg layers from that cross, but it would not be that many. Some form of brown will be inherited by most chicks so the eggs would be blue egg shell with brown coating= green eggs.

Lol. The lady said she was going to try to tame it. Im betting it didnt work too well
That reminds me of a Craigslist post I saw in this thread
https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/436863/oh-craigslist-you-amuse-me-so
about someone with a cat they were giving away that was pretty mean which turned out to be an opossum.
I wish I could find it, 'twas hilarious.

I think I mentioned that I once crossed a penedesenca and a welsummer expecting the offspring to have extremely dark eggs and the genes cancelled each other out and the eggs were pale. SOOO disappointed.

I crossed a penedesenca and a Minorca (white eggs), The eggs were tinted.

That's great CC. Do you have pics of your cabinet bator to share?

I'm having problems with my turners in my bators with the weight of all the turkey eggs. We replace one motor already and it goes for a bit then over heats and quits. I was unplugging it and starting it again. Now I have given up on the motors and I am just using an egg carton top to tilt the tray back and forth.
I don't guess they were made to turn turkey eggs day in and out for months on end.

Go figure!
