The Old Folks Home

Dsgard We are planning on Jurassic World also. It has been very odd that no reviews have popped up. I have read the studio had an embargo on reviews before today which is not usually a good sign. That is what they generally do when they know the movie stinks and don't want word of mouth to kill it before it opens. I am hoping it is good. I have seen so many bad movies, that I am much fussier about what I see. Even then I walk into some real stinkers and rue the day I spent money on them.

We saw trailers for a long string of junk -like they put out every summer because the kids are out of school, I'm thinking I'll be having long dry spells again - between movies.

I hope when you do see the movie, you will kindly leave a review - good, bad or other?, on my movie thread.

You seem to have been a bit gloomy here. None of that, enjoy the lovely summertime instead. We've been having sunny weather for a few weeks now, but temps are still pretty low, around 65 in the day.

I'm starting to get the hang of my job now, but the downside to working is not having any time to BYC and seeing a lot less of the animals. My compost is getting less attention than it deserves too. But I'll try to check in every once in a while anyway.

Felix, I will gladly trade you the 90's we are headed for today, for your coolish 65,

Volcano slopes can make it so you don't need to make a fire as they can provide it for you! And as I recall, many of the volcanoes in Central America are active.... Could make for some very hot times!
The hot spring spas are all at the base of the volcanos.
Lots of active ones throughout Central America. Costa Rica is the size of West Virginia and has 6 active and 61 dormant or extinct ones. The craters of the active ones range from 6-12,000 ft.. You can either drive or hike to the craters of most of them. They don't let you go to the summit of Arenal since some tourists got killed in an eruption. It's been sleeping for the last couple years. The highest is Irazu and on a clear day you can see both the Atlantic and Pacific from its summit. During a recent eruption of Poas, there was an accompanying earthquake that destroyed an entire town on its northern flank just before I visited there last.

CR powered the entire country's electric needs from renewable resources this year for 75 days. They're the first country to reach that milestone. Mostly hydroelectric, geothermal(think volcanos), wind and solar.

I've been to 4 of the active ones. Arenal

This is the crater at Irazu (indigenous word for 'thunder and earthquake mountain'.

This is the new crater at Poas. The craters of most are filled with acidic sulfur lakes.

The next one, Rincon de la Vieja is steeped in legend. Stories say there was once an indian princess, by the name of Curabanda, who fell in love with a young man, named Mixcoac, from an enemy tribe. The girl’s father disapproved and threw the boy into a volcano crater. Heartbroken she decided to live on the side of this volcano where later she gave birth to Mixcoac’s child who she threw into the volcano so he could meet his father. Until the end of her days she lived at the volcano and became a healer. Locals began to refer to her home at the volcano as ‘Rincon de le Vieja,’ which means ‘Old Woman’s Corner’.

The last time I was there, the park guides told me the one they were worried about was Turrialba. They said that one day the crater lake disappeared. It spewed this year after having been dormant for almost 150 years.

yep I learned to type on a manual typewriter... PROOF that I will be six decades tomorrow.

deb
Our high school typing class was a whole year. I got pretty good. Part of my time in the army, I was a colonel's secretary. During most of it I was a S2 (military intelligence) clerk typist that was all day typing. Multi copy forms with all the blue carbon paper. I know, the above parenthesized phrase is an oxymoron. I was also a general's driver.
When I got out of the army and looking for a job I heard western union was hiring. I thought, "I'm a great typist" so I applied. I had never seen an electric keyboard and I sucked. They told me to rent an electric typewriter, practice and come back to reapply. I rented the typewriter but never went back.
Back then I could type about 70 WPM on a manual. On an electric, it was like 20.

... The very best thing about typing on a computer is not having to start a new paper page when you make a typo - mistake gone, correction in place. What a time (and paper) saver!!! ...

Oh so true.

What I hate is when I forget.....

And I actually look at myself in the mirror....

Oh, and I try not to look at my hands.
I think my hands are OK but who is that person in the mirror?

Silly Boy....I wash fruit for "guests".... or from the store.... If its on a tree out in the yard... fair game.

You have fruit in the high desert? What, cactus?

When we were younger we were always looking forward to birthdays - double digits, official teenager, driving age, voting age (smoking age), alcohol. After that there's not much left to look forward to. I haven't seen too many people excited to hit Medicare.
We should come up with some milestones so there's something to look forward to.
I think I'll be excited for medicare. 2 more years, WHOOP WHOOP!

How about being the oldest person to ever live? Sounds like a goal to me. I'm going for 200.

Everyone needs a hobby.

Good number. I'm sure I'll make 100.

And I would be totally fine if I died tonight. I've had a good life. Don't be sad for me.
When people get old, they're more comfortable about the inevitable.
Most of the old people I've known had your same attitude.

But you're not old.

If you eat those greens you will live forever

Greens, fruits, berries, fish, meat, fat - in other words, real food.

We have a lousy toilet in this house - it plugs up about once a month unless you hold the flush down for a little while every time you flush. Luckily, it only seems to back-up when DH uses it. I know it is not the plumbing under the floor, I went in the basement and checked it out the last time it plugged up completely. The toilet plumbing drops right down into the 4" cast iron pipe and straight out of the basement. DH is determined to change out the toilet when we get a little ahead on our finances. I can't wait till we remodel the bathroom, but that won't happen until after we add a bathroom upstairs - which we can't do until we raise the roof over the kitchen...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DEB!
When the kids were little, we had 3 bathrooms and in 3 days all 3 were clogged. I usually do all my own plumbing but back then I was working 7 twelves and had no time. The plumber took the toilets outside and found my daughter's dolls in each one.

Only to more land/less people/less traffic.

My goal is to move north of Caribou when I retire. Been looking at hundred+ acre lots up there but then I spent my slush fund on a new roof and house paint and now I can't even afford to dream.
I don't think 100 acres can be called a lot. A farm or woodland parcel at least.

Sorry Oz, but I get to add my two cents to the conversation and then I am done.
I believe in DNR's for specific reasons. Not for reasons such as if I were going to be paralyzed but if I have head trauma where I do not have hope of recovering consciousness. I also feel people should be allowed to die with dignity and choose to have a DNR if that is what they want. Obviously this is a very personal choice and I think it should always be up to the individual. Now when it comes to being buried, nope not for me. I completely understand people who wish to be buried but have no wish at all to moulder away in a grave. Spread my ashes on the trails and I will be happy.
All that being said, not planning on dying any time soon. Plan on pounding out miles and miles of trails in my life still. :D

That is why it is so nice to fill out one of those "what I wanna happen if x happens" forms. It is terribly stressful for loved ones to have to guess at what you wanted. Also, with it all written down, what YOU want, actually gets to be followed (giant Irish wake, one friend scattering your ashes on a trail, religious service...whatever) or from the living will.... Just how long do you want to be on life support? What kinds of measures are you happy with?

It is super important.

I wrote out my first will at 16..... It isn't morbid... It is practical as well as very kind to those you love.

Everyone who'll listen knows that I want cremated then tossed on the garden so I'll at least be useful once in this lifetime. Also it's my way of saying "bite me" after I'm gone.
