The Old Folks Home

Yeah it's a bluegill, kids love catching them. We have crappie here also. I was hoping to nail some big pickerel, bass season doesn't open until next Sunday. There's huge trout in there also but you need a boat and fish deep. As soon as school lets out I'll be taking a couple of them bullhead fishing there.

I have caught a pickeral from lake Guntersville. It was delicious. Those other species I am not familliar with }}>>}||||÷¤÷>

Quote: Bama's right - a crappie is in the same family as bluegill, but they are not the same fish, and that's a bluegill.

Beer can, I spent part of my childhood living in a small town on the St. Lawrence; I caught my share of bluegill, and yellow perch, too. I never went after bullheads, but some of my (male) classmates did - it seemed to be a sort of rite of passage.

Do I remember correctly, and you fish for bullheads at night?

When I has a kid in Chicago, my father took my brother and I fishing. I caught a small one and my father said it was a blue gill- then my brother caught one that was larger and white with orange spots. My father got all excited about his and took it home so he could look it up in his fish books. I felt bad my fish wasn't important. deep sigh!

Bullhead are much like catfish, but they have a sharp spike on each side of their heads by their whiskers and one spike on their backfin. Got to be careful handling them. They usually only bite at night.

Well, I think that you are super important!

Okay Alaskan, are you being nice to me because my birthday is next month? Or is this a feminine side coming out. Hopefully not Bruce Jenner or wait I think it's Caitlynn now.

Diva every fish is a prize with my kids. The small bluegills and perch I grind up whole for fish burgers, for the chickens.

Just looked up catfish, I guess they have those 'stingers' also. They do have big catfish here, there just not as common and I've never been lucky enough to catch one.

Well, had to do some work on the bee hives today. specially hive #2, it just kept looking worse & worse. Wasn't going to "fix itself", so I went in and did demolition on it.

They had bur comb between frames almost as thick as a small flashlight casing running vertically between the frames and stuck to both sides.

They had started drawing comb up through the inner cover opening
th.gif
They also had done nowhere near enough work at drawing out the other frames. They only have maybe 4 full frames of drawn comb! And this after more than 6 weeks!

Put that hive tool to work in hive #2 and took out a BUNCH of garbage comb, losing honey, larva, eggs, bees and I hope NOT the queen. I didn't even see her today and to be truthful, wasn't looking that hard to find her. I then took the outer frames that hadn't even been touched and placed them between frames with brood etc. in a patchwork fashion. I left all the wax right there so they can recover it and the honey if they choose. I did the best I could to make sure the frames were pushed close together, top to bottom & centered in the deep so this doesn't happen again.

Part of the issue I believe is that I have slightly warped frames
clear.png
They don't want to stay together at the bottom

I did get a couple mouthfuls of comb and honey... OMG it is so different/better than store bought!

I had no idea! So THIS is what honey is supposed to taste like!
bow.gif
I sure hope they get their act together as I want some this fall!

Hive number one was a LOT better! They've drawn out 5-6 frames and only a very minor bit of bur that I just knocked off and left inside at the bottom of the hive. I also patchworked their frames to urge them to draw more comb as well. I want to get that 2nd deep on BOTH hives so they can really expand their population, I can stop feeding them, and they can make/fill some honey supers for me!

OK Had to read up on what Burr Bomb was or Burr Comb

http://www.honeybeesuite.com/tag/burr-comb/

We provide them a place to put their honey and baby bees.... But sometimes they prefer to make thier own... Its honey comb made otherplaces than in the frame.

According to the article above its a sign that they may swarm...
