The Old Folks Home

Thanks for letting me vent all... Been a bad couple of days (weeks really) WRT plumbing. After 4 more trips to Lowes today (and 7 hours of messing with everything) I have a fully functional kitchen once again.

While there I saw a replacement dishwasher I want & it goes on sale tomorrow, so ONE more day of demo and repair and I should be good for another 10-15 years or so. My present dishwasher is (I sincerely believe) the original from 25 years ago, and it doesn't clean worth a dang.

Turns out it wasn't just the water supply line to the dishwasher preventing it from being pulled out... In someone's infinite wisdom, they punched a hole in the wall behind it and ran a wire directly up through the wall to the circuit breaker panel for power. So they then cut the wires and attached them to the dishwasher with it pulled about 3/4 out. So once it's that far out, the wire goes taught and that's as far out as it will come.

SO... tomorrow I will buy an outlet box, outlet, and outlet cover, and cut the wire (circuit breaker off first of course) and then install a new outlet box back behind the dishwasher for it to plug into. I could just cap the wires and run the plug from the new dishwasher under the sink and plug it in where the garbage disposal is, but then I'd have an ugly hole in the wall with a wire hanging out, and both appliances would be on a single circuit... So I get to do some electrical stuff too as it turns out. Not a problem as I can do that stuff as well.

SCG, I remember your story about the electricity, screwdriver and cockroaches. Still snicker thinking about it

Silly girl! Gotta love it when even the electrician is stumped trying to figure things out

Glad you eventually got it all figured out. Just curious... why would you "hide" your wireless router under a floor grate?

Sorry! Anyway, If I could find a place like that but that is structurally sound, where I could buy it (and/with some acreage with water) for a song and a dance, I'd have a contract on it tomorrow! I can do basic plumbing, electric and carpentry as well as flooring and such... really almost all the construction trades. Since I am now retired (yup, I quit at the slave factory) I could dedicate myself to making the place great over time and as I could afford it.

Chicka; so sorry to hear about your well problems! One thing to have to carry water to the animals... another thing altogether when there's no water to carry to them! Glad the well didn't go dry and it was "just the pump!' I know, I know... that's gonna run some $$, not to mention re-building the pump house, but I bet it's still a lot cheaper than having to drill a new well!!

I can't believe what well drillers want nowadays. It's rape I tell ya! I love the idea/thought of living in a 150+ year old farm home, but then my common sense returns and I realize I'm not a young person anymore and would not enjoy the perpetual repairs and "flukes" involved with living there.

Hope all had a great Tuesday!
Thanks. Ya it's great that we now have water! Yeah! It will be an easy fix for the pump house roof. It's a tin roof that was screwed down. lol
Now fixing the lean too that's another story. But I wanted it down anyways it is full of junk and I was scared of snakes being under that mess. lol

Scg your ex sounds like he got lost in a youtube video and forgot the next step. Sorry. But it's nice that your Bf fixed it. Thanks for the tip on the iron. I just ordered a new one. lol

I would be afraid of messin up someones personal tools for sure.  Its like borrowing tools from an Auto Mechanic.   Or Machinist....

Thought I have seen documetaries regarding professional kitchens...  Man o man they bang up their tools ALOT.  and they dont buy the foo foo stuf you see on the internet...  they just buy decent quality and bang the heck out of it.  I am talking pots and pans...  The Chef has his own personal knives but the rest get those ones you can bang on the handle with a hammer....  kept sharp of course.

I just found a restaurant supply that isnt half way to the border from me... I am dying to poke my head in there and find out if they sell retail.

I want:
The knifes I listed before
a Better knife block
a larger saute pan
and a cast iron griddle

But I also want to look at those long pans they use for steam tables.  I am hoping I can find one that is about twelve to fifteen inches long by four inches wide.  They have stainless tops for them...

I also want something to do Turines in.  Roasted veggies layered with shrimp and a Chicken broth with Geletin in it poured over to fill all the gaps.  sliced after gelling and served up....  Low Low cal but elegent and pleasing to the eye.  I am on Weight Watchers and while the reciepes are getting better they are trying to "duplicate" that comfort food into low calorie and its just sometimes nasty tasting.

Also I dont want to have to "adjust" the recipes for company.   Light filling food is possible and NO ONE should be able to tell.  Thats my goal.

Deb, Michael uses Hinkley knives. They are expensive for sure. I wasn't afraid of ruining his knives. I was afraid of cutting a finger off! Lol We always hand wash the knives and keep them in Hinkley wood blocks right on the stove. The cookware he uses is old, but still looks great bc it's very easy to clean with a Chore Girl. It's anodized aluminum by Magnalite. Again they were very expensive but well worth it bc they have held up for the past 20 years. We always hand wash them also. When we first met, I was in shock at the money he spends on cookware. He loves to go to Williams Sonoma. I could never justify paying so much money for cooking stuff like him, but guess that comes from my being a single mom for so many years and needing to always watch my finances. I inherited some really nice stainless steel cookware and 8 loved it. But once I started using Michael's pots & pans, we ended up sending my set to my daughter in Florida earlier this year. A funny story-he bought a copper, round-bottom bowl, paid over $100 for it. A few months later, a gal came to me when I was selling antiques wanting to consign some stuff. Among these items was a bit smaller copper bowl like Michael's.Long story short, her bowl didn't sell, so I asked her if I could buy it. She sold it to me for $5.00 :) Michael thought about starting a personal chef business last year, but changed his mind. He likes retirement better.lol And I understand about special dietary needs as I have Celiac Disease. Michael did have to learn how to cook gluten free, and we still experiment a lot, but he not only picked up on it well but eats gluten free right along with me at home, for the exception of his bread as he loves that nasty sourdough bread. Haha
Heck,go check out that store. It'll be fun for you :)

@lynnhill

I would love a set of Hinkleys but I am not responsible enough to keep them.

Its like giving me a cadallac to drive and me loading up the back with a load of firewood.

For what its worth I love Sourdough bread... My fav way is to make French Toast out of it. Or use it in savory soups...

Wow Deb you have been thru it all too. :/ sorry

DH does not let the power issues bother him. :/
The only thing that bothers me is the fact that the house is not grounded. Once I get that taken care of I can live with the inadequacies.

I dont have a DH to take care of stuff.... Just me. I can fix most things and am a pretty good at demo work. Its the building stuff and finishing work that I have to hire out for someone to do.

Give me direction and I am very handy so the electrician would only have to tell me what to do once and then afterwords I could rewire the whole kitchen.... But I would need him to come in and inspect the work before I would be happy with flipping that switch back on.

I would NOT attempt hooking anything up to the Breaker box... he would have to do that... I believe I will need a larger one in the utility room to cover the new modern needs for refrigerators and freezers. Not enough space in the old box.

Another thing has to happen that I am NOT qualified to do is someone needs to analyze what kind of power is coming in to the house and determine if it can accomodate what I want. It should... but i am not sure.

I also want to run a power line from the house out to the chicken coop and on to the horse corral. I have NO lights out there and every once and a while something spooks my girl and she thunders about that big old corral snorting at something. I want to be able to flip a light on from inside the house to let whom ever is out there that "someone is home".

I could use solar and probably will for general lighting out there... But I need power in order to run clippers and possibly a grooming vacuum... And if and when I find a new farrier run a fan for him to keep cool in the summertime.

And of course in the coop I want to do the brooding and possibly hatching as well... No MOre Chickens in the house...

Up here, PGandE will do that for you--check your power usage.

@ronott1

I want to keep as low a profile with SDGE as possilble. The power to the pole near the pump house is all that they will test for any way. From that pole on is my responsibility.

Right now all my breakers are shut off. the only power consumption I have going is for the well. And its costing me 5 bucks a month to run... Horse has to have water.

Yep, single and staying that way

Tried the alternative twice and there won't be a third time... fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. Have a couple of great kids (and grand kids) from the first mistake though, so not all bad. Also intend to move in the other direction... east, not further west, potentially coupled with a lean to the south or north, not sure which yet.

Well, the roosters just decided to light off and it is very dark still. Not even a glimmer on the horizon yet. Dumb birds. If I were still sleeping (like I should be) I wouldn't even hear them. Have a fan in the window blowing 50 degree air in and the room is nicely cooled but I was still warm and tossing and turning seeking the cooler sheets. Ah well, I'll make like Diva and take a nap later today

Hope y'all have a great hump day! If you're no longer humping, then have a great retired Wednesday!

Dang... LOL. Wasnt proposing... any way At sixty I gave up on marriage a very long time ago.

I have a friend who just moved to Montana.... Very pretty country and you can collect your rain water if you want to.

she and her husband went from Kentucky to near Flathead Lake Montana. They have horses like mine and offered to give her a retirement home If she needs one. The well will go dry in the next couple of years so at that point all my dreams will end. Katee will have to move out. So I figure Montana would be a nice place for her.
