The Old Folks Home

We had squash for dinner. Acorn squash with red onions, hot Italian sausage, dried cherries and Asiago cheese - baked together with olive oil and sage.

I have 4 sweet pie pumpkins I'll probably start one tonight. I just vacuum sealed 4 cockerels.
I have 2 vacuum sealer units and I'm not happy with either one. One is a Food Saver and the other is a Seal-a-Meal.
I think I'm going to order some shrink poultry bags.

....................................

I posted some olive egger pairs on craigslist yesterday. Today I posted some Penedesencas. I have some pullets that have too much white on them - otherwise perfect birds. I also have too many cockerels. These are 6 to 9 month old birds. I listed them as $15 for cockerels and $35 for pullets.
Other than these occasional fire sales, I'm asking $250 for mature trios.

I got a reply. A guy said he could go $30 for 2 pullets.
Here is my reply to him.

"Sorry, no can do. This is the rarest breed in North America. I normally sell trios for $250. I posted this ad to clear out some birds that had some feather color flaws but are still outstanding birds laying extremely dark eggs.
They are among the darkest egg laying breeds in the world, on a par with Marans. Their meat is so famous in Spain that they have their own festival.
Fira del Gall. Fira del Gall de Vilafranca del Penedès - Fires, festes, oci i llocs per visitar.

It took me 2 years to find my foundation stock and they were $15 per chick for day olds.
Also, it costs me well over $30 per bird to get them to laying age. I would eat them before I sold them for less than I have in them.

I challenge you try to find black penedesencas anywhere in North America that are for sale.
If you can get POL pullets for less than $75 each, let me know.
I've been searching for another flock to get new genetics for the last 6 years. I know everyone in the US and Canada that has black penes and they don't have enough to sell or just won't sell any.

Sorry to disappoint you but 30 for 2 pullets isn't even close to a serious offer.

My son thought I was too harsh but my wife didn't.

Good grief had to take a look - I thought it was a poo quilt but you really mean a (Winnie the) POOH quilt. Big difference. I couldn't imagine why anyone would make a quilt of "poo poos."

You obviously don't know me well.

I don't think your response was too harsh. You weren't rubbing their nose in it or being mean for the sake of being mean. I thought it was informative and firm. I think we need more "reality checks" and less toe the line answers. I also hope that the person responds back in kind, and not with hatred and name calling.

I agree with SCG, I think your response while a bit "tough" was spot on. Sometimes people don't know what they are trying to purchase and I would bet this person didn't know the breed like you do. Went through some of this while trying to sell one of my horses and my trailer. Had someone try to lowball my trailer saying they could get a three horse trailer for the same price as my two horse trailer. I told them to go buy the three horse trailer and stop bugging me. I sold it for what I thought it was worth. I do my homework before I list something for sale and while I will usually list it high to give a little wiggle room, I also know the lowest limit I will sell the item for too.

Sadly, I doubt CC's bargain hunter will profit by the education, though you never know, they might.

Some people just shrug and say, "can't hurt to try," so I don't generally get mad at people who try to talk me down on a price, but sometimes it's downright insulting. Like the time when I was running an ad selling rabbits and this guy calls and asks, "how much for all of them - cages, feeders, everything?" "What, my whole herd??" (I wanted to be sure I was hearing him correctly) "Yeah, the whole thing. All of the breeders, and the equipment" I thought for a few seconds. "Two thousand," I said. It would have been a bargain at that price, but this guy had no idea what I had, and I was getting pretty annoyed. "Too much," he said, and disconnected.

Or the lady that called a nursery where my husband worked, and was trying to haggle on the price of some bushes, saying that she could get them at such-and-such a price at another place (were they were little more than rooted cuttings). Exasperated, the nursery owner snapped, "lady, you can't compare plants on the phone!" and hung up (this was in the days before smart phones; nowadays, of course, you can!)

@ChickenCanoe Not too harsh. Very informative and firm without talking down to the enquirer.

Off to work...have a great day every one!

Another problem with selling so low that you're giving things away, the recipient has no respect for what they got.

Kind of like information. If people have to pay for it, they respect it. If they don't, they won't.
