The Old Folks Home

I'm not a fan of grits but I do like steel cut oats.

Spent the last few hours getting the coops ready for winter. I did a 100% change of litter in all the animal houses and even did the windows and screens in the chicken coop. The guineas did not like me coming into their guinea abode to give them a cleaning, and I'm surprised they all survived, the way they were trying to crush each other to get away from me and my Scary Dust Pan of Doom.
I don't know why guineas are like that. Your birds and critters will appreciate your efforts on their behalf.

I have used a non-stick pot too but they still stick some. Not as bad though.

I soak mine in cold half and half for 30-45 mins before I turn on the burner.I Never ever use instant (quick) grits. Whole milk works pretty well. Half and half knocks them out of the park though.
Add a little smoked cheddar if your momma isnt around (bc you will slap her)

It snowed here, but mine needs a good cleaning again. I know what you mean about the birds about killing themselves off while in there cleaning, not so bad when they can be out and about in the yard and can leave the run, but when they can't be out, they are scrambling like little scared chickens.

Yup. All the others can come and go at will but the guineas it is recommended to lock them in 6 to 8 weeks or so... I'm shooting for 8 weeks but

their abode was nastay.

I been known to look at the pot then discreetly make it disappear in the trash.

I have a 3 strikes they're out rule. If it comes out of the dishwasher dirty 3 times it goes away.

I agree about cooking grits in the pressure cooker and using a vac seal bag--too much work!

I am having one of those days....

...Went out at about 10 to do chicken chores and heard snarling and chicken distress sounds. I went back behind the shed and found a Trader Joes hen on the other side of the fence being attacked by a little dog. I climbed a ladder to get over the fence and was almost over when the ladder fell back--making me fall head first into the neighbors yard.

Then I had trouble getting back over the fence. I put the hen onto the fence and she managed to get back into the back yard fine.

I did some damage to myself though. slivers, cuts and abrasions. Likely some bruising too...I am not in good shape for going over fences...Those days are gone--not too good at falling any more either.

Thank you for sharing, Ron. I had a run in with a hoe earlier, I managed to step on it and slam the handle into the side of my head. I'm glad I'm not the only klutz.

Also note to self: after having birds for more than 5 years on a certain type of litter, don't suddenly change brands. Shavings are not shavings are not shavings, the birds told me tonight as they all stood on the coop porch and stared into the abyss of the coop, not wanting the new, fluffier litter to touch their toes. Because it will kill them. It took 40 minutes PAST bedtime to get them all in tonight.
